Update 16:00 hours pst

The explosions that struck the Boston marathon on Monday “appear” to be to a terrorist attack, according to the White House.

“Any event with multiple explosive devices — as this appears to be — is clearly an act of terror, and will be approached as an act of terror,” the official said in a statement, according to Politico.

“We don’t yet know who carried out this attack, and a thorough investigation will have to determine whether it was planned and carried out by a terrorist group, foreign or domestic,” the official added.

It's absurd that everything has to turn into a... well... 'meta' discussion.

It's just sad that we have to look at it that way. Why can't words just mean what they mean? This attack was clearly meant to spread terror. The specific politics of it don't even matter, as far as that goes.

But if I were a broadcaster I would keep that suspicion to myself and avoid speculation. Speculations in the "news" media are irresponsible -- but then, irresponsible is what most of them are these days.

He used that exact word.
I put up a quote of that in LBN and it got locked. I spent 20 years listening to people talk for a living. I used to be a court reporter. Shorthand reporter.

Bill Bratton is a former Boston Police Commissioner and I would consider him to be an expert.

I'd put a rofl here if people hadn't died. But yeah, it's always the same when it's a proto-fascist doing the damage. If it were a Arab, they would automatically be part of the vast, Muslim conspiracy.

This needs kicking again anyway. We should keep this at the top until they come up with another "lone wolf"

Useful concept in these cases.

Hate speech by mass media (Bill O'Reilly calling Dr. Tiller "Killer Tiller&quot .

That's an example. Then some "lone nut" goes and actually kills the person that is the target of the hate speech. And the media person totally disowns all responsibility for putting the idea in the "lone nut"'s head. Millions of people hear the same message. Chances are good that one guy will act on it. And the media washes their hands of responsibility for hate speech or incitement to violence.
