Apparently the explosions took place several hours after the winners crossed the line. One report said that there were many people down.

explosions occurred as runners passing the site of explosion.
edit: correct that winners had cross the line couple hours earlier, 'amateurs' were continuing.
Appears correct that many injured, and response immediate as emergency personnel along the route to attend to Marathon.

(111,240 posts)and the force of the explosion was straight up, not laterally.
I'm still thinking it's electrical in nature, probably in the DC power system that Boston still has to run ancient elevators and the modern subway.
ETA: they just said the injured went to Mass. General. That's good news. If the injuries had been massive, they'd have gone to the Level I trauma center at Boston City.
tho I did see a runner tumble as s/he passed and the explosion hit. I/we/all HOPE you're correct re: electrical.
