John Kerry urges talks as world watches for North Korea missile http://bit.ly/134HOtb
Secretary Kerry, speaking in Japan on the last leg of an Asian tour dominated by the crisis on the Korean peninsula, appealed to the North to step back.
The United States remains open to authentic and credible negotiations on denuclearisation, but the burden is on Pyongyang, he said.
North Korea must take meaningful steps to show it will honour commitments it has already made.
While in Asia, Kerry has talked tough on the Norths unacceptable rhetoric, but also sought to lower the temperature by supporting dialogue with Pyongyang and saying he would be prepared to reach out to North Korea.
In Seoul, he gave Washingtons public blessing to peace overtures made by South Koreas new president, Park Geun-Hye, who in recent days has signalled the need to open a dialogue and listen to what North Korea thinks.
The missiles mobilised by the North for a possible launch are reported to be untested Musudan models with an estimated range of up to 2,485 miles (4,000 kilometres).
That would cover any target in South Korea and Japan, and possibly even US military bases on the Pacific island of Guam . . .

(14,128 posts)He is doing good so far, but he looks exhausted. Very sure that Momma T is making sure he gets some rest while he can.
Hope he isn't trying to compete with his predecessor (he shouldn't have to).

(85,971 posts). . . but, I'm always thinking of that 'long-distance windsurfing' he did well into older age, when I look at him.
He's going to set his own individual style and record, I'm certain. I can already see the outlines of Kerry diplomacy. I like his integrity, most of all. Next, his commitment to diplomacy that he's demonstrated as Senator. He's already initially engaged in many of the most sensitive areas; like his recent legislative efforts regarding aid to Pakistan.
I think his stature always looks robust, even though his face shows his mileage.
