White families weigh return to Kansas City school district

http://www.kansascity.com/2013/04/13/4180560/white-families-weigh-return-to.html#storylink=cpy

"Even staunch advocates of school desegregation agree that urban public school systems need to attract families like those who came to tour.

They live in middle-class white neighborhoods of southwest Kansas City that have mostly abandoned the public school system since the 1970s and 1980s.

Their neighborhoods have fewer families with school-aged children than the rest of the district. And 77 percent of the children in the neighborhoods, mostly in the 64112 and 64113 ZIP codes, attend private schools, according to the U.S. Census.

Generations attended a segregated school system prior to 1954, going to white schools throughout the city while black students were clustered in inferior schools in a growing urban core."
