A Question About Search Warrants

My wife and I are staying at a hotel in town for a few days and this morning the local PD was called to respond to a call that the hotel has yet to tell us what it was all about.

Anyhow they went through the entire property and said they needed to come in and take a look around. I was not there at the time but my wife was and she being a nice person who doesn't want to cause conflict let them come in and not only did the look around they also opened the cabinet doors and dressers..

Did they need a search warrant or were they in their rights???

Thanks

If your wife agreed to let them in, they did not need a warrant. nt Zorra Apr 2013 #1
Since your wife gave them permission they didn't need the search warrant. n/t Lil Missy Apr 2013 #2

they had found anything illegal, it could not be used as evidence in court. The best response is "I would preferred that you don't come in".

if they didn't receive authorization from the property owner. Your wife might have said 'no' about searching your room.

If they found/find anything they want to later used against a perp who had rights to the searched property, the perp might attempt to keep any evidence found out of an evidentiary record, and might or might not succeed.
