Phony story alert: "I am willing to give up some of my constitutional rights in order to be safer"

Here's the latest wingnut story flying around. I finally found one non crazy source, a local news radio station WOKV:

“That sentence talking about giving away freedoms for safety and security- that bothers me,” says Aaron Harvey.

He tells me his 4th grade son was told to write a note reading "I am willing to give up some of my constitutional rights in order to be safer or more secure" following a lesson led by a guest speaker at Cedar Hills Elementary School. The lesson itself was taught at the end of last year, but Harvey didn't find the note until about 1 1/2 weeks ago.

I obtained the guide for that lesson, which was apparently aimed to “create an awareness of the five rights contained in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution” and help students “determine their opinions on which rights they value most and least.” The lesson included a visiting constitutional lawyer, which the district tells me is a partnership used specifically for these civics-based lessons.

The lesson itself isn’t in question, but rather what Harvey says the teacher did after.

He says the teacher selected several students out of the class to write that statement and sign it. It’s the same story he’s hearing from other parents with children in the class.

OK look again at that paper. Notice that three different colors were used to write the sentence.

Also another wingnut source I shall not name suggests this was written in crayon. OK, WTF. I think I stopped using crayons in either 1st or 2nd grade. Do you really think that a 4th grade teacher assigned a civics assignment to be written in crayon? That source also said: "The paper sat unnoticed in Harvey's son's backpack for several months until last week, when his son's mother almost threw it away." Riiiiight...the kid just keeps that paper in his backpack for months and somehow his mom finds it at this point (when the Senate is debating the gun bill).

And finally I wonder how many wingnuts will realize that "I am willing to give up some of my constitutional rights in order to be safer" was pretty much the Bush domestic post-9/11 policy?

Myself, I would gladly give up the rights of private people to have guns/bullets because
that indeed makes everyone have their first amendment rights of life, liberty and the freedom to assemble where ever they choose to assemble, which is taken away by those with guns and bullets.

Benjamin Franlin said "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"

We would have had mountains of cure if not for bullets and guns in the hands of private citizens.

It is time to stop this carnage.

The 2nd amendment needs a new Supreme Court interpretation of it, becuase the corrupt last court that ruled in Heller (which of course did leave wiggle room for more interpretation) missed the ball in their ruling.

Time to 100% categorically change the 2nd.

BTW-the letter above looks like it is written by a terrorist and not a child. It does not have the unconsistent consistency of a child, nor the proper formation of a child.

The letter was clearly written by someone with an angenda in the gun issue.
One of the million dollar suits the NRA hires could achieve something like that.
(Not to mention the Karl Rove Roger Stone type of handwriting on mail in ballots in 2000, though Roger is usually more professional, so he wouldn't do something so like this.

BTW, this reminds me of a Mel Brooks phony letter being read in a bit where the person at the other end reading says, Trights? What is Trights? And passes it around to others all who don't know what the word Trights means.

No, this letter is an angle someone is playing in professional politics, most likely a gun lover NRA type extremist or professional looking to incite the issue.

In fact, all the arguments the last few weeks at just the time the issue is being voted on, are most liklely gun inspired.

And what kid would write are, cross it out and write or.

Scripted professional agenda angle. Ready for its close up and target audience.

Have a new supreme Court reinterpret the 2nd.
Just say no to all guns in the hands of private citizens and the gun problem is over.
After that time, no further discussion of the issue or soundbytes are needed.
Problem solved.

seem bizarre to me.

my kid kept a rotting sandwich in his backpack around that age and I didn't notice it until it stank. and he shoved papers in books and notebooks.

A kid using crayon in the fourth grade to write something doesn't strike me as terribly odd.

I have no idea whether this story is true or not; I just don't think that what you put forth as evidence that it's not true, leave something to be desired.

No shit. I can't tell you how many times I heard "If you have nothing to hide, you shouldn't worry." back when Shit-for-Brains was trampling all over the Constitution in the name of national security. That from the very people who are trying to make a stink out of this.
