(111,245 posts)Sending this to the top of the greatest page will have to do, educate as many people as possible.
This is what a 33 year long conservative attack on labor looks like and it is shameful.
And now they have the unmitigated gall to say that American kids aren't good enough to hire, so they have to go offshore!!
To hell with the lot of them, as soon as possible please.

The graphic above is based on the corresponding 2011 report. The 2012 report has similar graphs and statistics, but doesn't have the same presentation.
Just in case you were wondering, Romania and the US maintain their positions at the top (ie. high percentages) with the 2011 data, but Romania increases to 25.5% while US stays at 21.2%. Bulgaria (not on the graphic) comes in between Latvia and Spain.
Lots of other statistics and analysis in the full report as well.

(94 posts)This is based on the percentage in families with less than half the median income. African countries have such a low median income that they probably don't do that badly in measures of relative poverty like this.

(949 posts)The corporations & 2% are. The rest are either doing just OK, barely getting by, or not getting by. Sure, the US as a whole has loads of money, but it's not equitably distributed.

(23 posts)That if I ever had to leave America for some reason I would go to Finland. You can see why from that. Low child poverty, best education system in the west, and pretty good medical care. It was at the time when Mitt was running, I figured America as we know it would die if he won anyway so I could leave with a clear conscious. Anyway, I'm sure the Right Wing will then blame it on the minorities, that's what they generally do when confronted by the US failing on an issue. All the fault of the black and/or hispanic people who have the nerve to want to have the same rights and opportunities as other Citizens instead of quietly submitting to a second-class position in American Society.

(20,783 posts)live in households whose income is more than 50% of the US median? Seems high.

(7,745 posts)There is a massive disparity in national median income between the nations listed. Using PPP of the US national median income would give a better comparison.
All the poor nations that surround the areas covered are ignored. Bulgaria? Croatia? Serbia? Moldova? Albania?....

(6,900 posts)"The official poverty measure is a specific dollar amount that varies by family size but is the same across the continental U.S. According to the guidelines, the poverty level in 2008 is $21,200 a year for a family of four and $17,600 for a family of three (see table).,.....The current poverty measure was established in the 1960s and is now widely acknowledged to be flawed.2 It was based on research indicating that families spent about one-third of their incomes on food the official poverty level was set by multiplying food costs by three."[link:http://www.nccp.org/publications/pub_825.html|
