when it was proposed to blast the dead into outer space. His best line: "Get those stiffs off my property!"

"The line about getting stiffs off my property might've been Jonathan Winters' favorite too. In the fall of 1982 I was working in the Baskin-Robbins in Toluca Lake, near Universal Studios, and Winters was a regular customer. In fact, trainees were prepped on just what it was he would order.

He came in once when I was standing near the tub of fudge brownie or whatever flavor, and so ended up waiting on him.

"How are things in Whispering Glades?" I asked.

He looked up at me kinda squinting and said "oh, YOU're the one who saw that movie. It grossed about a dollar sixty-nine."

Then as usual with him, he jumped out of chitchat mode and went into character, took a step back, and performed that favorite line in his fiercest dead-serious CEO voice-- "There's got to be a way to get all those stiffs off my PROPERTY!"

Another thing this anecdote tells me is that he remembered the movie in spite of its extremely poor reception at the time of its release-- and obviously thought something of it. Don't we all!

It was possibly the wierdest thing I had ever seen (Mr. Joyboy's mother cannot BE unseen!) and I fell instantly in love with it. I had forgotten about that one. I hope he enjoyed the dark side of his comedy as much as I did.

But when we watched Jonathan Winters on the tube back in the day, he would laugh harder than anyone in the house.
He kept saying, "That damned fool!" over and over.
He was SO far above what passes for comedy today.

He was the funniest comedian, whether it was what he said, how he said it or the faces he made. I can remember there were many times when he was on TV he had you laughing so hard you had tears running down your cheeks. I'm also sad that many young people didn't have the opportunity to experience him. Rest in peace Jonathan Winters, you have many people in heaven who have been waiting for your humor.

I think it was 20/20 or one of those types of shows. They were spending time with Robin Williams, who went over Jonathan Winters' house to hang out with him during the interview. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

He always seemed to be there and even as a child I thought he was hysterical.

Also loved him in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

RIP.
