If Tiger Beat On The Potomac were the actual Tiger Beat from back in the day, then Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen would be the star correspondents. VandeHei would have overseen all the arguments over which Beatle was the grooviest, and Allen would be spending his time probing through the garbage behind Peter Noone's house. It would have been far more honorable work than what they're doing now.

Their semi-regular "Behind The Curtain" features are Patient Zero in every form of incurable skin crud that afflicts the courtier media. Today's, in which we discover that, to the apparent amazement of the two authors, the parents from Newtown who came to Washington to box the ears of the national legislature on the issue of the insane attachment this country has to its firearms may have gotten a little help on their political agenda from people who help with political agendas for a living. Stop the fking presses.

That rule is just one of the ways that the Newtown families, political novices just a few months ago, are proving to be savvy, effective advocates as they promote the gun legislation that has finally begun to move through the Senate. The families are well-educated, and many are well-off. They have been polished and sharp on TV. They're mostly non-political, but quite accomplished in their own fields. With access to money and media, they're using persistence, visibility - and, most all, their unique moral authority - to help prod Senate action. They also have their own lobbyists - several of them, in fact
