8 Year Old Shames GOP Lawmaker into Dropping Welfare-School Grades Bill

?1365776441

Before Thursday's legislative session began, Campfield was confronted by a group of protestors which included 8 year-old Aamira Fetuga. The child handed Campfield a petition signed by people who opposed Campfield's bill while a nearby crowd sang "Jesus Loves the Little Children."

Campfield attempted to walk away from the protestors, saying several times that he didn't think children should be used as props, but Fetuga followed him through the hallways as the cameras rolled:

Campfield later proposed that the bill be sent to a committee for further study--sparing himself a potential legislative defeat as several of his fellow Republicans had indicated they didn't support the measure.

The bill, named the "Education to End Poverty Act," would have reduced welfare payments (which average about $185 a month) by 30% for any family whose child failed a grade. Families would be forced to take action including taking a parenting class, meeting with teachers, enrolling the child in summer school, and getting tutoring, before their welfare payments would be restored.

When she said she was worried about the electric getting cut off, his response made me want to bite his face off.

Kill multiple birds with one stone:

improve parenting skills (probably a good idea for all parents in general)
parents convey message that education is important
tutoring/more education as a sign that education is important
parents emphasize good grades are important (even if there a money carrot dangled in front of them)

EXCELLENT!!!

Whenever I see one of these very young people, I find myself wondering if I'm actually looking at a future Governor, Senator, OR President!

If they're already getting active at this young an age, just imagine where they might be, and where they might take us (and LEAD us)!!!

I remember as a kid, we'd be jumping rope while droning little rhymes of "Kennedy, Kennedy, gets our vote. We'll throw Nixon overboat..." (and the corollary from the other side, switching the names, of course). But there was NEVER any kind of front-line activism, where these young people are stepping up and speaking out and grabbing the attention of the media. Whether it's young Latinos, young siblings of Newtown, or young ladies like Aamira Fetuga. Or heck, even "Kid President." I'm so proud of them! It makes me hopeful for our future as a nation and as a world.

I think I'm liking this. A LOT!!!!!!
