Conservatives (both white AND black) really do take the African American community for fools.
Just thinking about Rand Paul's visit to Howard University, and how laughably patronizing he sounded when he "taught" the students there that Republican Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves and how late 19th and early 20th century civil rights leaders were Republicans. Because apparently they didn't already know that, being college students and all.
But it's not just the white conservatives who are guilty of this.
I recall former (thankfully) Congressman Allen West (R-Crazytown) proclaim himself--in all seriousness--the "modern day Harriet Tubman" and that he was going to "lead them off" the Democratic Party "plantation." He then proceeded to call his fellow colleague (and Congressional Black Caucus member) Maxine Waters a "slave master."
Now unfortunately I do not have the breakdown of how many African Americans voted in the Florida District 18 race where West lost to Democrat Patrick Murphy or poll data as for whom they may have voted, but I can't imagine that very many of them bothered to vote for the black West over the white Murphy, modern day Harriet Tubman be damned. Because crazy is just plain crazy, no matter whose mouth it comes out of.
It's as if these people are pathologically incapable of realizing that the African American community: a) knows their own history and how the current positions of the political parties on civil rights came to be, and b) are capable of realizing which political party better suits their own best interests.
