Nice outreach to women, goposaurs!
From Freak Out Nation blog:
The House GOP just blocked the Paycheck Fairness Act, which was created To amend the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to provide more effective remedies to victims of discrimination in the payment of wages on the basis of sex, and for other purposes. So, when Republicans try to feign a connection with minorities and/or women, remember this when you vote. Every single House Republican voted to block the Paycheck Fairness Act.

More on the story from The Huffington Post:
Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), the sponsor of the equal pay legislation, filed a discharge petition on the bill Thursday morning that would immediately force a vote on it if she could collect 218 signatures. Democrats also put forth a motion on Thursday known as the "Previous Question," which would have enabled them to put the Paycheck Fairness Act up for a vote, but Republicans killed the effort by a vote of 226 to 192.
...
"I think we're looking at a group of people who either don't believe there is a pay gap or who just want to be contrary," DeLauro told HuffPost in a phone interview. "This bill isn't a liberal plot. We have enough statistical information to demonstrate that no matter what the job is, whether you're a waitress or bus driver or civil engineer, women are paid less money."
Every Republican that was present for the vote on Thursday voted against the motion to bring the bill up for a vote, so DeLauro is unlikely to get the number of signatures she needs for her discharge petition. But she said she has managed to drum up bipartisan support for the bill in the past, and she is going to continue to work on her Republican colleagues this session.

I remember when that kind of thing didn't happen around here.

(3,363 posts)Here's a good read on the issue, which is an important one. (Link below.)
The energy around here arguing against "fair" legislation of any kind is disappointing.
No facts, links, or expanded reasoning - just condescending blanket statements of opinion tinged with anger and divisiveness.

From some of what's been going on here, I guess I need to offer this:
Apply liberally as needed. Until you get it right. I mean, left. That is...

Equal Pay/Compensation Discrimination
The Equal Pay Act requires that men and women in the same workplace be given equal pay for equal work. The jobs need not be identical, but they must be substantially equal. Job content (not job titles) determines whether jobs are substantially equal. All forms of pay are covered by this law, including salary, overtime pay, bonuses, stock options, profit sharing and bonus plans, life insurance, vacation and holiday pay, cleaning or gasoline allowances, hotel accommodations, reimbursement for travel expenses, and benefits. If there is an inequality in wages between men and women, employers may not reduce the wages of either sex to equalize their pay.
An individual alleging a violation of the EPA may go directly to court and is not required to file an EEOC charge beforehand. The time limit for filing an EPA charge with the EEOC and the time limit for going to court are the same: within two years of the alleged unlawful compensation practice or, in the case of a willful violation, within three years. The filing of an EEOC charge under the EPA does not extend the time frame for going to court.
Title VII also makes it illegal to discriminate based on sex in pay and benefits. Therefore, someone who has an Equal Pay Act claim may also have a claim under Title VII.
Title VII, the ADEA, and the ADA prohibit compensation discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or disability. Unlike the EPA, there is no requirement under Title VII, the ADEA, or the ADA that the jobs must be substantially equal.

(10,942 posts)I pray that Independents show up in mass during the 2014, they are more rational. Real Democrats and Independents in Massachusetts saved a good liberal Governor from defeat during the 2010 election, while the "Progressives" threw their weight behind a no-hope candidate, so as to live up to their "principles". In the world of many "Progressives" Down is Up and Ass-back-wards is full speed forward.

we don't need a bill to perpetuate that narrative. All your party needs to do is open there mouths. Enough said!

(61,690 posts)if they like to make 77 per cent of what their white male colleagues make. Tell them you're going to propose that bill to all the white males in the House. See how they like it. Then tell them they have no remedy for such blatant discrimination.

2. Why in the hell is anyone still surprised that women hold sexist and misogynist views? We are ALL raised in a patriarchy in which women are not full human beings. Women are still the oppressed group which most deeply internalizes their own oppression. This is not news.
