Feds scoop up medical marijuana patient records in Oregon investigation

Despite Oregon’s best efforts to keep medical marijuana patient records private, a federal search warrant forced the state agency to hand over some records, according to recently discovered court records.

The warrant was executed in November of last year against the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program, the state agency that administers the Oregon Medical Marijuana Act, voted into law in 1998.

As part of an investigation into growers in Oregon suspected of dealing on the black market (the PI doesn’t name suspects in investigations unless they have been charged with a crime), a special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration obtained the warrant to aid in his investigation.

“I know that in order to effectively pursue this investigation,” wrote special agent Michael Gutensohn in his application for the warrant, “I need to investigate each of the patients, growers and caregivers associated with” names discovered in the investigation.

who try to buy guns every year...they send their name, address, phone number directly to the justice department who investigate a grand total of 5% annually leaving felons trying to illegally buy guns alone while tracking down cancer grannies..

Cannabinoid Patent Exclusivity Only Applies To One Condition

Exclusive Interview: Dean Petkanas, CEO, KannaLife

(The Company Just Awarded An Exclusive Cannabinoid License By The Federal Government)

The exclusive rights to apply the cannabinoids found in marijuana as therapeutic agents awarded by the U.S. federal government to the firm KannaLife only apply to one specific medical condition, KannaLife's CEO told Toke of the Town Monday night.

Dean Petkanas, chief executive officer at KannaLife Sciences, told us that the exclusivity applies only for the development and sale of cannabinoid based therapeutics as antioxidants and neuroprotectants for use in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.

You'd smile too if you were granted a license by the feds to sell Cannabis Medicine- with patent protection

Any condition for which marijuana is an effective remedy, the Big Pharma companies are patenting cannibinoids.

And that is the major reason why the puppets who we elect to office are so damn determined to help the Puppet Masters keep the profits that they' re willing to continually wage drug wars on the citizenry, even as we citizens take to the polls to make the states have sensible laws.

the feds are awarding the patent to individual companies

while they bust dispensaries and say there's no medical use

see: 6630507

Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services (Washington, DC)

which begs the question: If the Feds took the patent, doesn't it belong to the People of the US?

Reporters are too dumb to even do their own research.

Attorneys (at least 1) are not:

Cedric Chao, a lawyer for the city, cited a 2003 patent application by the U.S. government that said cannabis compounds are "useful in the treatment and prophylaxis (prevention) of a wide variety of oxidation-associated diseases," including certain types of strokes and immune-system disorders.

Note that the paper says "application" - not that it was indeed awarded in 2003. But they brought it up at least.

After all, it would be tough to beat Reagan's attorney general Edwin Meese for zeal in arresting dope smokers, attacking porn, and ignoring "innocent until proven guilty".

And of course, there was Nixon's attorney general John Mitchell, who was found guilty of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and perjury and sentenced to prison for his role in the Watergate scandal

I just have the doctor's recommendation, which is part of a medical record protected by HIPAA. I went to a MJ dispensary 3x last year but now I grow my own because I want a minimal paper trail in spite of state laws that supposedly protect me. I have been nervous about the feds snagging names off databases.

because, obviously, at the federal level, Democrats don't support their constituents on this issue - and Republicans know their representatives don't, unless they're libertarians.

But, honestly - if the Justice Dept and the FBI, etc. wanted to really target criminals, they'd look in the bankers' boardrooms.

I'm pretty much sick of the federal govt. Since the Republicans are able to gerrymander districts, we have regressive govt no matter what.

I also seriously wonder if the U.S. is going to remain as one nation because the differences now - support for gay marriage, drug reform, health care, etc. is divided along regional lines at the ballot box.

But few want the feds to spend money going after marijuana dispensaries, on either side of the aisle.

So, you have to figure this is just another form of harassment to try to stop the legalization movement.
