Airbus Is Installing Special Big Seats For Fat People — And Shrinking All Other Seats

Airbus will offer airlines the option of extra-wide seats on its A320 jets to keep up with "trends in demographics" and accommodate large passengers, it announced this week at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg.

The extra-wide seats will measure 20 inches across instead of the standard 18 inches, and will likely be installed only as aisle seats.

The window and middle seats will each lose an inch of width to generate the extra space.

...

The real winners will be airlines, who will be able to charge extra for the extra-wide seats.

I cannot wait to be charged extra when the only remaining seats available are the wider seats. Earth_First Apr 2013 #1
Are the 17 inch wide seats still the regular cost of an 18 inch? That seems unfair too. Electric Monk Apr 2013 #2

It's a double win for the airlines.

*To those who are quick to rise on the moral high ground; I am fully thankful for the ADA compliance by the airlines.

And you can get them if you are in their mileage program or pay extra.

I had it with the TSA in Newark airport - they are perverts pretty much - after one guy made me sit down and massaged my feet - and another thought it was funny to unhook the bra of an old woman - and the reported thefts grew - I just drive and won't go to the west coast - the last time I needed to fly, I drove to a small airport far from my home rather than Newark which is 15 minutes away just to deal with one TSA guy at the small airport who was respectful and polite.

They are built smaller because it's where the plane begins to taper off. I was sitting next to a woman for a flight and we were connected like Siamese twins from butt to thigh.

But the seatback in front of you does.

Once I was in a window seat on the last row, where an engine was real close to me. Now I'm not particularly sensitive to noise, but the deafening roar from that engine made the whole flight sheer torment.

However, some commuter plane back rows go all the way across and don't have armrests. This makes for a nice bed to lie down on if you are alone there on flights without too many passengers aboard.

And as long as I have to pay extra for everything I do no matter what it is then all I want to say shut the fuck up because I'm paying for it. It doesn't matter if it is cloths, medical care or yes a airline seat. Am sick of hearing it. I'm willing to pay but I don't have to take the ignorance some people think they are entitled to tell a heavy person. I could tell you tons of stories. It ain't pretty either. You have a right to think want you want about a heavy person, but you don't have a right to express it to a heavy person you aren't related to in the first place. Sorry if I come off nasty but damn it sometimes its a pain in the butt to hear it non-stop. It seems this is one of the last acceptable groups of people to hate on.

I remember when flying was considered a luxury because it was expensive. And there were some nice amenities that came with that price ... including comfortable seating!
