For Bald Eagle Watchers

Those of us who've been watching the Decorah Eagles in previous years know that this year the parent eagles built themselves a new nest, and unfortunately for us, the cameras are on the old nest, so we're only getting the occasional glimpse.

So this year, I'm watching the Bald Eagle nest in Santa Catalina. They haven't had a great deal of luck there - apparently the eggs aren't always viable, because pesticides in the prey they eat cause the eggshells to sometimes be too brittle. Last year, this pair had two eggs, but only one hatched. The mother wasn't very good at parenting, and when the chick was just a couple of weeks old, she disappeared from the nest for days (perhaps she was a bit immature?), and one night when the father was also away, a fox came and took the baby bird. It was awful to see the dad's distress when he returned to the nest.

It was very sad, but this year, they're back. Mum laid two eggs, but one broke. The other one hatched, and so far, she's been doing her duty well and is almost constantly on the nest, and when she's not there, dad takes over. (He's no. 81; she's 82). I'm enjoying watching them, and I'm so hoping this little eaglet survives after the bad luck they've had previously.

Enjoy, eagle lovers!
