Yolanda Spivey is an African American woman, she was unemployed for two years, and had applied for over 300 jobs to no avail despite a having a decades worth of experience in the insurance industry, and a college degree. Spivey wrote in Techyville that as an experiment, she first started declining to state her ethnicity on Monster.Coms Diversity Questionnaire, but that had no effect. Spivey then created a fake profile, with identical information, except that her fictitious job candidate was white, and was aptly named Bianca White (Bianca means white in Spanish). Suddenly, responses from employers came pouring in.

In any event, I'm not surprised at this, but am very saddened.
I guess it'll take another lifetime or two, I'm getting to old to expect to see a significant reduction in racism in this culture.

(12,620 posts)1. Thousands of white women with collage degrees and insurance industry experience are still out of work and have never had skyrocket job offers. 2) Many black people are named "White". (Google "Walter White", if you don't remember him).

(68,644 posts)It was a fictitious profile with different name and race.
Her original profile indicated black, then she tried unspecified, still no good hits.
When she changed her name AND race to white, the skyrocketing began, she says.

(22,336 posts)People with black-sounding names on their resumes don't get responses, like phone interviews or anything. She started getting responses when she said she was white and put in a false name.
I'm not surprised at all.
Yes, thousands of white women are also out of work, and only when they thought she was also a white woman was she in a position to compete for what few jobs there are.
I can't imagine she's all of a sudden getting offers. It seems like it would be responses, but I'll edit my subject line because I re-read and saw the headline at the link, and it does say "offers'.

(318 posts)And I think many of these are white people with quite a bit of experience or education.
Unless I'm wrong?

(20,606 posts)The point is ethnicity seems to be playing a role in whether or not you get considered for a job.
Can you really not see that?

(955 posts)And she wasn't getting job offers just because she became "white." She started getting job offers because she had 10 years experience in the field, a degree, and became "white."
