Right or wrong of policy aside - do you believe the President's offer to cut social security benefit

through chained CPI will help or hurt public support for the Democratic Party

If they fight it and keep it from ever taking place, they'll come out smelling like roses. If they let it go through, then they'll rate just as badly as the republicans are doing right now.

about "entitlement reform" - That is Orwellian bullshit - to mask an assault on ordinary Americans and they know perfectly well that there would be no need to reduce social security benefits if we simply made some modest adjustments on the upper limits of FICA tax and then say clearly and boldly, " I will support cuts in socials security benefits - when hell freezes over!!" - that would win solid support for the Democratic Party for a generation.

In my state, I think it's possible that the republicans are going to have a hard time parsing their their usual debt rhetoric, opposition to cutting SS, and their desire to cut Medicare.
