Or speculators raised the price of gas at the pump, which raised the price of everything else in the chain.

Or drug and insurance companies held the line on costs and bonuses.

Or nursing home fees exploded to the point you could hire a private nurse and stay home.

Yeah, I suppose it could be extravagant with, say, 1950 prices.

This is 2013, Washington! Get with it.

If the congresscritters think we SS recipients are living high off the hog, then I will state what I think about their wages and perks.

As your employer and considering your present (recorded) income/salary, I think we need to do a job performance audit, a production output survey and rank your personal attributes and ability to interact well with others and communicate honestly and effectively with your constituents. To speed up this process, we will require a financial report of hours worked, extra income/salary you have obtained during your present term and you might as well throw in a birth certificate while you're at it. That seems to be the hot button item these days.
