Gun Control Deal

Senators Pat Toomey of PA (R) and Joe Manchin of WV (D) are announcing a tentative agreement on background checks at a Wednesday presser.

“Tomorrow we hope to finalize it,” Manchin said Tuesday night. A Toomey spokesman added, “Sens. Toomey and Manchin continue to work on final details, but they appear close to a deal.”

The plan is expected to stop short of language currently in the bill that would require background checks on nearly all gun sales, including between private parties. Instead, Toomey aides said, the proposal would require background checks for private sales at gun shows and on the Internet, two areas that are currently exempt.

Nevertheless, support for the plan by Toomey, a reliable conservative with a top rating from the National Rifle Association, would be a major victory for Senate Democrats and President Barack Obama, who have stepped up their calls in recent days to ensure that criminals and the mentally ill do not have easy access to guns.

If the bill 'excludes private parties' (except via internet) then I think it will be pretty useless in the long run with that big loophole in there.

Loopholes are ALWAYS a problem!!!

1. Background checks are already done on Internet sales.

If I buy a gun from Gunbroker.com, the gun is shipped to an FFL where all the paperwork has to be done. NICS, 4473, etc. Lawmakers really should try to know what they are legislating about.

2. I guess pro-gun crowd doesn't really believe in being "responsible" when it

comes to back alley sales. Get what you can from the wingers, then do more every year.

7. I agree with your analysis.

It's like building 80% of a bridge. It does no good if there are gaps everywhere!

And universal background checks should be the simplest, most obvious change to current law. Yet already compromising away any actual chance at reform.
