4. Texas, too. You can be fired because your boss doesn't like your sense of humor.

Or is just tired of seeing your mug each morning.

Now, federal law prohibits larger employers from firing people for certain reasons, such as race or creed. I'd be glad to include sexual orientation in that list. But keep in mind, federal law 1) still doesn't prevent employers from firing employees for completely non-business reasons, such as their bad sense of humor, and 2) only applies to employers that have more than a certain number of employees. The baker looking for a single assistant may hire only white Southern Baptists, if he so chooses.

If you don't have a contract the only standard the employer has to go by are federal and state laws which leave a lot to be desired even in the best states.

you can't be fired for being black, you can't be fired for being a woman, you can't be fired for being an Evangelical, you can be fired for being gay in AZ.

protected categories? You can't be fired in any state for those reasons. There are no protections other than the federal protections in AZ. Is that true of all the other states marked on that map or are there states where other statuses are protected by state law beyond the federal protections but being gay isn't one of them?

I expected to see about half a dozen.
