Social Security: We have had many chances to avoid this mess.

Remember when GW Bush wanted to take your Social Security investments and give them to you to invest at your pleasure? Remember that? Remember that we rejected it? I didn't trust Bush's motivations. Even his own party figured he was up to no good. But, that was one chance.

Remember that for more than 25 years we have had dire warnings that Social Security contributions would not be enough to cover baby boomers when they retired? Remember how we ignored those warnings over and over and over again? Remember how we didn't do jack shit?

Sound vaguely familiar?

Well here we are. Social Security benefits are about to strangle us in part because we want cost of living adjustments and other tweaks that will allow us to pull out more than we put in. In a short time, we will have more money being sucked out of SS than we could ever pump in unless something is done. So, what are you going to do? I mean, other than threaten to impeach Obama.

Well? Oh, what the hell. Let's blame Obama.

Doubled FICA deductions in 1982 in direct consideration of Boomers retiring today and we STILL heard relentless attacks upon this Earned Benefit Program.

The truth is, the GOP hates these programs and has worked since FDR "brung it" to kill it---When Medicare was added later? The GOP's heads nearly exploded...now they had to work twice as hard...and indeed they did and still are.
I just really never Dreamed this latest fight to preserve in the face of reasonable fixes--would be against a Democratic President Who Promised these Vital Programs Are Off The Table.

Bottom line? This approach sends the strong message that "Old people are disposable unproductive units" not worth investing in.

Social security warnings of the past - just another way to get the money - Will there be enough money in the future - yes - here is the thing, the government likes using SSI money - there is enough money to pay for 70 or so years. The difference and be fixed with tweaking. The problem and the advance view - was the baby boomers - we are like an amimnal going through the snakes body - you see this lump moving forward, but after us, it gets smaller. SO SS had put lots of money inthe system to prepare for us boomers,
But, if the money is actually used and withdrawn from investing in the government, well that causes problems for the poor planners. They just don't want SSI to take the money out and spend it. This is not a problem of SSI, but of how the government has been using our money. This whole talk about how there would need to be cuts in 30 years is based on assuming the same amount of spending each year, which is currently less than taking in. It does not account for us dying off and fewer people replacing us. I know I won't be here for more than 20 more years. I have had cancer and may have it again and I have left a pretty much simple life non-dangerous life - all those sun tanners out there are far more in danger of not living long.

Do not panic - SSI should be spending more than it takes in right now, it was designed to do that.

Are you one of those people who thinks they their own retirement all sewed up so fuck everyone else, or just incredibly short sighted? Were you planning on eating weeds or something when you're old?

to cover the boomers?

Remember when you started selling bullshit to cover for the generational theft and pitched Bush's privatization as an opportunity to avoid this and showed your slip?

The Turd Way lies as much and as big as the TeaPubliKlans, just slightly less stupid in their fabrications but of course the Pukes started out in a similar place depending on the memory hole and distortion before moving to uncut and nonsensical bullshit.

If we didn't have 536 politicians looking to score points on the issue. Too many cooks spoil the broth. And every one of them wants to put his or her 'stamp of authenticity' on any bills that come their way.

That's why the tax system is a convoluted mess and no one wants to fix it.

why?

Because TGG was not getting enough, and well..there were just SO damned many of us eager young people who would be paying into the system for the coming 40 years, so hey..why not?

And, we were promised that our sacrifices would not only benefit our parents, grandparents, but would be PREPAYING our own benefits for when we retired..

Joke's on us, eh?

TGG..thegreatestgeneration (who in actuality did nothing more than ANY generation faced with a similar dilemma, and who were generously compensated for their efforts, like no others after them)
