Sorry Roman. You've been eclipsed.
A new yacht launched Friday by Lürssen, the German luxury boatbuilder, is now the largest motor yacht in the world. It's name is Azzam, and at 590 feet long, it has officially bumped Roman Abramovich's yacht the 536-foot Eclipse from its number one ranking.
Lürssen won't comment on the ownership. But industry sources say the owner is likely the royal family of Abu Dhabi.
Lürssen will say that the boat was "without the a doubt the most challenging yacht that has ever been built." Aside from its sheer size, Azzam had to be super-fast and able to ply shallow waters "while providing luxurious and sophisticated accommodation to its guests."

For speed, the boat is powered by jets rather than propellers. It's got 94,000 horsepower under the hood. And it hit a top speed of 30 knots, which is about 30 percent faster than most mega-yachts. "It's like a 590-foot jet ski," said one executive involved in the project.

(4,291 posts)"provides high paying skilled labor jobs to thousands of workers" , please let us know how that works?
Crepuscular
(1,057 posts)Ship building is not exactly like digging ditches and yachts of that caliber are filled with finish work that will be done by highly skilled craftsmen. You seriously think that a ship that cost $600 million dollars, will not provide any high paying jobs?
HangOnKids
(4,291 posts)I did not say that craftsmen were not involved I asked how that translates into high paying jobs. The skyscrapers in Dubai require craftsmen to be built and yet the UAE uses slave labor from India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. So give me some facts, you have been playing this bait and switch game for a couple of weeks now, me I am not buying it.
Crepuscular
(1,057 posts)in Germany, which is not exactly known for using slave labor in their manufacturing sector (at least not in this century). They employ over 1,400 people. German manufacturing is kind of known for paying some of the highest wages in the EU for manufacturing jobs, no reason to think that the workers employed to build a $600 million dollar yacht would be unskilled, low wage workers. The ship took 3 years to build. If you factor in the production needed to supply the materials, it would easily account for thousands, if not tens of thousands of jobs during that time period. Have no idea what you are talking about...bait and switch?

Do you think the Wall Street assholes come by their lamborginis honestly?
OldDem2012
(3,526 posts)....they actually make themselves, to companies that sell things that are totally borderline Ponzi schemes and intangible in nature. You're also comparing skilled shipbuilders to accomplished swindlers who should all be in prison.
Why do you assume this company is screwing anyone over to become rich? They worked hard to establish a reputation over five generations for building excellent yachts, and selling them to wealthy clients willing to pay huge amounts of money for the finished products. Why the hate?
edhopper
(33,574 posts)I am NOT talking about the boat company, I am talking about the man who bought the boat and how he amassed that kind of spare cash to buy such an extravagant toy.
There are too few people who have accumulated far too much wealth at the expense of the rest of the population.
If you don't see that, you are truly blind.
This boat is a symptom of that injustice.

(100,065 posts)If anything they're outsourcing jobs to China and India and getting tax breaks so the corrupt CEOs can gain even more wealth.
This ship was built in Germany by a company that has been in the ship building business for over 100 years and which employs over 1,400 people. How is that outsourcing jobs to China and India??
HangOnKids
(4,291 posts)You think they pay German workers to build Audis BMWs and these ships. Jaysus. One would think you watch Fox news with that kind of thinking.

(1,057 posts)is another discussion but I don't have them spending it on something that provides workers with a large number of decent paying jobs. I don't mind rich people having nice stuff, does not bother me a bit. I'd rather see the royal family of the UAE buy a yacht like this then spend the money on some drones that would end up killing a bunch of innocent kids but I guess I'm funny that way.

That's brilliant thinking.

(1,057 posts)Exactly how are you going to convince the local population, which is overwhelmingly Muslim with a small number of coptic xtians thrown in, to embrace a secular European style social democracy? You sound like George Bush trying to force Iraq to embrace Western Democracy, all it takes is a $6 Trillion dollar war and a few hundred thousand body bags.

(25,699 posts)The UAE actually contributes several billion in foreign aid, primarily to other muslim nations, with Yemen and Afghanistan being the major recipients, and Pakistan and the Palestinian Territories being the next ones on the list. Dubai is also the epicenter of charity giving in the Arab world, with Non-government charities and donors raising and giving several billion more. And contrary to your assertion, the UAE doesn't rail against Israel (though granted the two do not have "official" diplomatic relations... they do have some economic and political ties despite that, however).
But don't worry. This is DU, after all, facts and reality don't matter when discussing the Middle East, Arabs, or Muslims in general.

My point is that the argument you presented - that "they" don't do anything for poor Muslims is factually incorrect, as was your claim that "they just blame the Jews." Neither statement is true, and both are easily disproved with even a basic grasp of facts.
Your statement was both ignorant and shit. Don't worry, this is DU, ignorant shit about Arabs is stylish, embrace it.

(35,437 posts)along with some of the worst poverty on the planet. I never said that "they don't do anything" for poor Muslims. I said that they could use that wealth to alleviate poverty much like Norway does with its energy reserves.
Here's an example of what I am talking about:
The purpose of the petroleum fund is to invest parts of the large surplus generated by the Norwegian petroleum sector, generated mainly from taxes of companies, but also payment for license to explore as well as the State's Direct Financial Interest and dividends from partly state-owned Statoil. Current revenue from the petroleum sector is estimated to be at its peak period and to decline over the next decades. The Petroleum Fund was established in 1990 after a decision by the country's legislature to counter the effects of the forthcoming decline in income and to smooth out the disruptive effects of highly fluctuating oil prices.

This one's a smooth million, probably a good deal - $$$$1.8 mil new.
The "Pilgrimage" has a real life counterpart - the truck - based "Toterhome". Most buses, coaches and motorhomes don't tow big trailers well, so these have evolved, at least in part, from the cut-up school buses that racers have been repurposeing since the '50's.
