Two Catholic Leaders Advise Denying Communion to Marriage Equality Supporters

The archbishop of Detroit, as well as a professor and legal adviser to the Vatican, are urging Communion be denied to those in support of marriage equality.

Communion, the weekly sacrament performed by Catholics, is a key part of Catholic identity. But Allen Vigneron, the archbishop of Detroit, and Edward Peters, a professor of Catholic canon law at Detroit's Sacred Heart Major Seminar, want to deny Catholics the tradition if they support gay marriage, which the Vatican opposes. Those who promote same-sex marriage "risk having holy Communion withheld from them ... being rebuked and/or being sanctioned," Peters said in a recent blog post. Peters previously said California Rep. Nancy Pelosi and New York governor Andrew Cuomo, both Catholics who support marriage equality, should be denied Communion.

As an attorney, Peters was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 to help advise the top judicial authority in the Catholic Church.

people no longer believe in transubstantiation and hence won't fall about because they believe they will be sent to hell for not taking communion. Are these guys taking a class, how to run off the rest of your followers? Because both the Church leadership and the Repukes seem to be aiming for the same goal of complete destruction of their organizations.

I think there's a box of those Town House crackers. I also have some Carr's Table Water biscuits, which closely resemble a communion wafer, but taste better with a bit of Gorgonzola on them. There are Triscuits and a number of others, too. I'm sure you'll find something you like. C'mon by. I have a great selection of wines, too, and will open anything for guests.

In my biased opinion this is a blessing in disguise (no pun intended). The Catholic Church is the wrong church for people that support gay marriage. I am not suggesting they give up their belief in God or Jesus, just do their worshiping in another, friendlier church.

The one thing we fight for all the time is to allow people to be, to live how they want. Yet many enjoy doing to other, in another direction what we fight against.

When you go belittling people for their beliefs, one is no different from the ones they fight.

Not only that, people that use religion to divide the Party is just helping the other side.

BYE!

without asking... they then force those that are concerned over their souls and equality to lie so they can receive communion. Secondly, do Catholics get to ask if the priest giving communion has ever molested or knowingly supported another priest who molested a child?

I mean, if we're going to put a tally on sins, I think molestation trumps homosexuality any day of the week (if you believe homosexuality is a sin, which I don't but raping children certainly should be, though I've read in the Bible it really isn't).

OK in the church it is a sin to have sex without marriage. But the church still gives communion to teen moms. What's the diff?

Also, what happens to a Catholic family when they have a child who is LGBT? The parents aren't LGBT, but end up supporting their children. This will drive a wedge in Catholic families which is wrong. So the parents won't receive communion because they support their child? That is not right.

Or what about the parents of teen moms, should they no longer be offered communion because they are helping their daughter raise a child?
For parents of LGBT this is a similar type situation.

Yet, when a teen mom has a baby, the church is there to support the grandparents and the teen mom.

(I live in an area with a very high teen pregnancy rate.)

Good Gawd. This is wrong and goes against free speech.

Unfortunately one person in this thread can't see the forest because of the tree's and think it's bashing that we dare to bring this up. They fail to realize if it wasn't happening, we would not have to bring this up.

Thanks for a very thoughtful post.
