Welsh miners union leader: a state funeral for Thatcher would be a travesty

his name is Wayne Thomas

(...)

“She ruthlessly decimated the mining industry, not because of the production, not because of the profit, but because of the people and that’s proven by many individuals in and supporting this current Conservative Government who were either advising or in her party at the time.

“It was absolutely personal. She detested the miners with vengeance and she certainly implemented those policies partly because of that.”

Almost 20 years on from the miners’ strike, Mr Thomas said the UK was still without a clear energy policy. He believes the mining industry could have continued similar to countries on the continent, where there has been a “planned and phased closure”, giving time to retrain the workforce.

“The people of South Wales, although they’ve seen many tough times, wouldn’t wish for somebody to pass away out of vindictiveness,” he said.

“I don’t know about celebrations, but they certainly wouldn’t lose a tear after this lady’s passing. The people I speak to, they certainly would not be in favour of a state funeral – she doesn’t deserve it at all.”
