(101,265 posts)It's a reference to the early 1979 strike:
The idea had to be dropped amid fears of unseemly scenes if soldiers clashed with pickets outside cemetery gates, papers released to the National Archives at Kew, west London, under the 30-year rule show.
The spectacle of bodies going unburied by striking gravediggers in Liverpool and Tameside, Manchester, came to sum up the industrial anarchy of the winter of 1978/79 which brought James Callaghans Labour government to its knees.
A paper drawn up for the Governments Civil Contingencies Unit, in January, 1979, warned that 500 funerals had to be postponed, and that while bodies could be stored for up to six weeks in heat-sealed bags, this was totally unacceptable for aesthetic reasons.

It was something Thatcher campaigned on in May 1979 - that under Labour, there were so many strikes that bodies were going unburied. You really need to look later for reaction to Thatcher - especially once the 1984 miner's strike started.

Thatcherism as the coming neoliberalism ending what the Brits called the "post-war settlement between capital and labor" was certainly the talk of British politics after 1976.
But, yes, of course you're correct that the real ravages of Thatcherism would wait for the 80's.
