about the elderly, poverty, war, human rights, or the future of the nation? Everyone should strive to be as indifferent as possible. It's not like we actually want anything to change. 179. Finding humor in some things...
Mon Apr 8, 2013, 10:31 AM
Apr 2013

is not a sign of apathy.

Some friends made me laugh at my father's wake.

When my brother died, one of my sisters got up at his funeral and told some amusing stories.

And when my MIL lay here dead in my own living room while we waited for the hearse to show up, Mr Pipi and I and his siblings and their spouses had a few laughs.

Should we be accused of "apathy" because we found humor in painful situations, then?

I find your judgement of others to be vile and disgusting.

I don't share the intense concern many have here with that particular issue, but then I don't feel the need to ridicule their concerns as being a "hissy fit committee." I see no evidence the OP is expressing humor in a painful situation. I see members here taking delight in ridiculing others concerned with an important political issue.

There are some profoundly unglued people tonight, and they all dropped by to hate on your LOLcats. If I understand correctly, I myself am a vicious plutocrat without empathy, and probably a few other things I haven't noticed yet. You too. Ain't it amazing?

Actually, I am very sorry for their angst, but it's hard to get a word in edgewise when there's so much flailing. More so since their powers of prediction are limited, as we have experienced over the past 5 years.

222. I think you may not understand the meaning/use of the word apologist in this context
Mon Apr 8, 2013, 09:13 PM
Apr 2013

It does not mean to apologize as in saying "I am sorry for x" or "sorry for the actions of my friend x".
It means to defend a religion, ideology, group, or in this case politician by making persistent arguments.

CS Lewis was a Christian apologist, my favorite in fact, he made some excellent arguments in more than one well known publication. He never apologized for his faith, not that I am aware of.
I am not Christian by the way, but I still respect him and his ability to make excellent arguments.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apologetics

This is close to the context used by the poster to describe the blog in question:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apologetics#American_Apologists

Of course a specialized term for Obama apologetics would require an additional wiki entry that would in fact term those engaging in it "Obama Apologists".

I hope this is helpful.

The real level of compassion of the Third Way element of our party is no longer being concealed. The mask of pretending to care about the same issues as traditional Democrats has dropped, and the vicious contempt of corporatists for the fears of seniors and the poor to this assault on our already tattered safety nets is on full display.

This is the attitude of utter contempt that claims to represent our party now. Don't think that people aren't paying attention.

What the Costumes Reveal
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/29/opinion/what-the-costumes-reveal.html?_r=0

On Friday, the law firm of Steven J. Baum threw a Halloween party. The firm, which is located near Buffalo, is what is commonly referred to as a “foreclosure mill” firm, meaning it represents banks and mortgage servicers as they attempt to foreclose on homeowners and evict them from their homes. Steven J. Baum is, in fact, the largest such firm in New York; it represents virtually all the giant mortgage lenders, including Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo.

The party is the firm’s big annual bash. Employees wear Halloween costumes to the office, where they party until around noon, and then return to work, still in costume. I can’t tell you how people dressed for this year’s party, but I can tell you about last year’s.

That’s because a former employee of Steven J. Baum recently sent me snapshots of last year’s party. In an e-mail, she said that she wanted me to see them because they showed an appalling lack of compassion toward the homeowners — invariably poor and down on their luck — that the Baum firm had brought foreclosure proceedings against.

When we spoke later, she added that the snapshots are an accurate representation of the firm’s mind-set. “There is this really cavalier attitude,” she said. “It doesn’t matter that people are going to lose their homes.” Nor does the firm try to help people get mortgage modifications; the pressure, always, is to foreclose. I told her I wanted to post the photos on The Times’s Web site so that readers could see them. She agreed, but asked to remain anonymous because she said she fears retaliation.

Emotionally-stilted, morally-bankrupt minds think alike!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022621891

First of all, I'd suggest that whenever you read a poutrager going ballistic about chained-CPI, look to see if they are including what President Obama's proposal does to mitigate the effect it will have on the most vulnerable. I can guarantee you that they won't because no one has seen the details yet.

But anyone on the left (including President Obama and Nancy Pelosi) who has been willing to negotiate about implementing chained-CPI has stressed the importance of including such measures.
There are two major changes necessary. First, add a bump in benefits to the very old, who are more likely to have high healthcare bills and to have exhausted their savings that supplemented their Social Security income. Second, exempt Supplemental Security Income, which serves the poorest, disabled and blind but still often leaves people below the poverty line.
One easy way to tell if people are including these mitigating measures in their calculations is that CBO has estimated that switching to chained-CPI will save $220 billion over 10 years. If these protections for the most vulnerable are included, that figure is reduced to $100-150 billion.

Personally, I'm still waiting for the president (or his proxies) to reveal that he was just trolling them to highlight their radicalism. "we even offered to touch the Third Rail of American politics, and they still said 'that's not enough'!"

A number of people here assured us that proposing chained-CPI was just a bluff to make the Republicans look extreme (as if they don't have a track record already), but -- as in the past -- there doesn't seem to be much of an effort by the administration and party leadership to make an issue of the other side's destructive radicalism.

I'm happy the alert failed. As someone said elsewhere on this delightful thread of yours, it's pulled back the mask. I want you to keep talking... and digging.

Bash Obama policy threads should be at the "VERY top every single day" if he is advancing bad policy. Just as good policy should be highlighted. Why is that so difficult for you to grasp?

So much snit over one idiotic impeachment thread. Sensible Centrists really need thicker skin. And you accuse liberals of *poutrage.*

I have no respect for the verbal abuse by a man or a woman that is posting a reply at DU.

It is unnecessary to make your point.

As a surviving member of VAWA. Verbal abuse is wrong, in any form. You do support VAWA, yes? I have posted many times on the issue. I sure wish they had made it to the TOP! It seems the outrage does not cover these issues. women, meh, not important enough.

There was no verbal abuse in the post. I quoted you, who proudly admitted that you posted flamebait. And don't assume the Recs are in support of Obama. Trainwreck threads are often recommended, just for sheer entertainment value. Of which you have provided, in spades.

I tend to ignore your threads -- they're generally way too fluffy and cheerleaderish for me, with crap blogs sourced. Maybe others do too, since they're not rising to the top the way you think they should.

And if Obama (or any Democrat) keeps advancing shitty policy, expect continued attacks on that policy. If you can't handle it, perhaps you should get out of the kitchen.

It's really an enlightening post. It shows clearly the divide between those who accept anything that is done by this administration and those of us who still question what is being done in our name.

It is a defining post, a clear post, about how those of us who question are looked down upon here now.

The ridicule toward the left is nothing new, but the open way it goes on now is quite new.

From a quick skim, it seems the person who caused the bulk of the problems is someone who posted a gun porn pic thread shortly after Newtown, in which even Skinner made a comment. (I'd post a link, but I think it was Meta. And it was probably the most toxic thing I've seen on DU and would rather not breathe new life into it.) So, consider the source.

Bigtree made a rather snotty comment re: "very important threads on SS," so he's not exactly innocent. Social Security IS a very important issue.

I'd wager the vast majority of DU supports LONG-OVERDUE, common sense gun control. Of course, opinions in the incredibly toxic gungeon may differ.

You don't seem to grasp that anyone with a computer and e-mail address can become a member of this site. Their intentions may not be "pure." STOP making it so personal. Some people thrive on being assholes and getting a rise out of others. Ignore them if you can't handle it. And rather than knee-jerking to anything you perceive as being anti-Obama, why not listen to what some of the more thoughtful posters are offering up? Have you not figured out who they are?

In closing: Gun control GOOD; cuts to Social Security BAD.

here's why the 'rage'.

we voted for democrats, over and over. we've donated money & helped gotv.

we've called, written letters & emails, marched and protested.

they are not responsive.

they. are. not. responsive.

when we attempt to organize, they infiltrate us, surveil us, put us in 'free speech zones,' hassle us, arrest us & worse.

and then, to add insult to injury, we are told by democrats like -- not necessarily like you, but like some people on these threads --

that we're not doing enough, we're not doing it right, our concerns are mere poutrage, we want ponies -- i can't even list all the crap.

the fact is, our representatives are not responsive. we are not their constituency. they don't represent us, they represent, 99% of the time, the 1%.

the constitution is a piece of paper. we are not 'the bosses,' that's a joke, and we're its butt.

It is unbelievable the number of ways the 99% has been split in this country and it is all by design.

I tried to bring that point up on a "people that paint their face like their sports mascot" thread, but it just seems to bounce off people's heads. "Fuck people that paint their faces like that! I will divide myself from them!". It may make a person feel good, but the fact still remains that you have whittled down the 99% further still. It is going to take The 99% fighting together against our common enemy to win this thing.

I really think that' what all the -American bullshit is about too. I do not ever remember ANYONE referring to themselves as a -American growing to adulthood. It's just another method to sew division among the people who really have much more in common than we have differences.

That is pretty rare on DU these days.
Back when this was a Progressive site,
Recs would top 1000 often.

We love our life here.
It is much more than just "surviving".
We "Live Well" on a laughably LOW "taxable" income using stuff we learned in the 60s. My Wife & I have a compatible skill set that makes
living sustainably and independently fun (most of the time).
Our bank account isn't RICH, but our everyday life certainly is.
My Wife is the ONLY Medical First Responder for over 60 square miles,
and we are both active officers and firefighters in our local Fire Department.
When people need help, we are the ones they call.
While that can be a huge Pain-in-the-Ass at 2AM,
it IS immensely rewarding, and we are grateful for this opportunity to be helpful in our little community.

But, again, we were/are very lucky to have this happen for us.
We did some leg work, made some choices, and invested a lot of sweat and sore backs, but LUCK is always a BIG part of the equation.
Planning & Control are subordinate to LUCK & Blessings.
Like most Americans, it can all disappear in the blink of an eye,
so we focus on being grateful every day.

That is WHY a traditional Democratic Party Issue like Social Security is so important to Democrats like us. We have seen what happens without it.
Social Security is the cornerstone of the Modern Democratic Party,
and the New Deal & Great Society Social Programs are a BIG part of WHY my wife & I have worked tirelessly for the Democratic Party for over 40 years.
As far as we're concerned, without THOSE, there IS no worthwhile Democratic Party. ANGER is an appropriate response to seeing these programs marginalized,
and the people who support them ridiculed.

Never say that your hard (EVER so hard) work here slamming and constantly criticizing this president at EVERY SINGLE DROP is for nothing. Those recs are obviously putting food on your table. You are The Man.

When you can't support your position with truth, facts, or outside verification,
you just fabricate some fantasy that makes you feel good?
Do you do this often?

Very creative, but childish and unproductive.
Also damaging to DU as a community.

You said:"Those recs are obviously putting food on your table."
which, of course, is an outright fabrication (polite for "LIE&quot .
I challenge you to support your claim,
or retract your fabricated Ad Hominem and apologize.

We don't need DU to put food on out table.
We grow our own.

That thread was not about me,
and I did very little work.
That thread is about THESE solid Democrats.

and the hundreds, thousands, MILLIONS of DEMOCRATS who support the cornerstone of the modern Democratic party, Social Security.

I am privileged to have been a small part of making THEIR voices a little louder.
If that gives you pain,
that is YOUR problem, and the others here who discount THEIR voices as "poutrage".

Cheers!

266. The man who does nothing but sit on this web site and criticize this president
Tue Apr 9, 2013, 06:50 PM
Apr 2013

day in and day out over EVERYTHING and then posts his little meaningless OPs and sits breathlessly counting the seconds and the recs is truly the LAST person here that needs to question anyone's intellect, bitterness or any other vaguely human quality.

You got your precious, all important recs. Yeah, you managed to juuuuust squeak past the 300 mark. The socks must be dancing in their drawers! And yet, here you are still posting your... whatever and you accuse ME of being the bitter one?

Why in God's name would I be bitter? The president's approval ratings just came out. He's at 51% and the group keeping him afloat is... LIBERALS as well as the young and female. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/04/08/cnn-poll-obama-at-51-approval-but-lower-on-key-issues/

"The gain among people under 35 years old was a whopping 15 points, compared to no change at all in the middle age brackets and a seven-point drop among senior citizens, possibly fueled by concerns over Obama's proposed changes to Social Security," adds Holland. "Obama has also gained among moderates, while his high support among liberals and his low support among conservatives has remained unchanged."

So sorry to have to tell you. 311 measly recs on a web site that few even know about versus the hundreds of thousands of liberals that support the man and always have. The numbers are not in your favor, though I know that you have totally managed to convince yourself otherwise.

But as I said before, congrats on the 300 recs! Your wife, I mean... that deer must be so thrilled.

I hope so, because this is a serious issue.
You have knowing posted false accusations about a member of DU.
This diminishes YOU,
and it diminishes DU.

I am referring to your post #263 where you stated:
"Those recs are obviously putting food on your table."
which, of course, is an outright fabrication (polite for "LIE&quot .

I called you on your fabrication,
and asked you to support it, or retract it.
You have failed to do so,
and have knowingly left false information about another member of DU standing
with YOUR name on it.
That is much worse than making a mistake out of confusion and frustration.
That is a sign of desperation and low character.

I take that seriously.
So should you.
So should DU.

If you have enough integrity to correct your falsehoods,
I will amend my posts publicly calling attention to them.

I take great comfort in knowing that you are the only person here so paranoid that a benign comment about your meaningless, purposeless recs feeding your deer and the mountains that you live in has to be blown up to some "fabrication." God, you love to hear/read the sounds of your own voice/words!!! I know this place is the Alpha and Omega of your existence, but pretty sure that no one else feels this way.

But maybe there's a reason for all of that paranoia. If only I cared enough to find out...

Tue Apr 9, 2013, 08:02 PM
Apr 2013

you have chosen to leave FALSE information and False Accusations about a member of DU posted at DU.
That is your choice, and a public display of your character.

In my 12 years at DU, I have never knowingly posted false information,
or knowingly posted an attack on any member of DU that contained fabricated LIES.
In fact, I rarely engage in personal attacks at all,
and prefer to keep my debates focused on the issues.
I have made mistakes,
but have always corrected them when information became available.

You are choosing to take the low road.
Until you correct the false information you have posted,
I will respond to any reply or comment you make to me, or about me,
with a post containing this bookmarked incident,
a screen cap of your desperate, fabricated Ad Hominem attack,
and a challenge for you to correct your falsehoods.

If you find the courage or integrity to correct your errors,
I will amend my posts to remove public mentions of your shortcomings.

There is little wonder that you and I wind up on the opposite sides of so many issues. It IS a matter of Values and Character.

Oh my God. You could not be more full of yourself if you tried. But the thing about arrogance is that it needs to be actually backed up with something. Like intelligence. Or a moral fiber.

You are BEYOND hilarious. You could type "Number23 is a poopy head" which is pretty close to the intellectual depths that you regale us all with here regularly anyway, and it would have absolutely NO bearing on my enjoyment (or lack of) of this web site. You mean absolutely nothing to me and your opinion, of me or of ANYTHING, means even less.

You, sir, are nothing short of absolutely ridiculous. Even that poor deer must find you an unbearable know-nothing bore.

..is that it is not OK to fabricate LIES about other members of DU.
Despite your furious spinning, that exactly what you have done.

Either support your accusations,
or remove them.
That is the RIGHT thing to do.

I take that seriously,
and so should DU.
When the Ancients first got together and established guidelines for their society, one of the first things they agreed upon is that
It is NOT OK to make up Lies about each other and spread them.
Virtually ALL ancient and modern cultures agree.

You state:
"You could type "Number23 is a poopy head"
I agree. I could type that,
but I chose not to do so.

I could have fabricated any number of LIES about you and posted them,
but I chose not to do so. Most of us don't knowingly post lies.
Fabricating Lies and posting them IS a sign of desperation and low character.

As promised:

Number23,
You have knowingly posted false accusations about a member of DU.

Every Democrat needs to see this thread in all its ugliness.

The mask is finally off, and so much for all the pretending to stand for the same values and principles as traditional Democrats. Standing up against assaults on seniors and the elderly and our bedrock safety nets now elicits mocking, sneering screeds like this, worthy of FOX News. It is no coincidence that this viciousness is brought to you by the reliable defenders of every corporate policy coming out of this administration.

Make no mistake about it: This is your party on corporatism. And this is the level of human compassion we can expect in this country when we cede our party and our government to them.

No pun intended!

As the Republican party has drifted ever further rightward into fruit loop land, right wingers who were not totally batshit crazy on social issues decided they MUST be Democrats and came over to the party. You can see it all over with usernames like conservative this and formerrepublican that, even former freepers posting as solid Democrats these days. They are still financial conservatives and the present Democratic party speaks to them on their fiscal matters, so they feel even more at home. Enough so that they can tell YOU what it means to be a Democrat.

Some are paid operatives I'm sure, but most are easily hoodwinked Repubs that decided they must be Dems because they can still hate on poors and not have to support walking caricatures like Gingrich or Santorum.
