I left in 1959 and have not been back except for occasional visits too.

Of course being so old that I remember when dirt was clean probably helped with leaving sooner.

...1990, returned for one year, remembered why we left to begin with and came back to New Hampshire. I lived most of my life there until my mid 40s and I'm now very late 60s. We won't return by choice.

I went to KU (Lawrence) a liberal pimple on the plains back in the 60's - early 70's. The politics of the state were plenty right-wing way back then - didn't need to be called TeeBuggers or anything. KU had its campus occupied by the National Guard and a couple (I believe) of students were gunned down.

However, whenever I met a plain-old Kansan they were almost invariably friendly and helpful. It was just, then and now, the politicians and religious zealots who thought they could make their $$s by being hateful.
