That poor detective in Jackson MS was shot with his own gun.

That fantasy that we all should have guns because we "good guys" will be able to prevent "bad guys" from killing people has another strike against it.

I actually feel torn about posting this because I feel very bad for the man and his family, but I think there is such a perpetuation of delusion among those who think that the answer to guns isn't respect and extreme caution but wild proliferation that counterpoints bear reporting.

My condolences to those that loved the murdered detective ... a very, very tragic story

The detective took his firearm into a holding cell/interrogation room with the suspect. I thought that was a big no-no everywhere.

It may have been a fatal error. That's what I don't get in the whole guns-are-good argument. No one can be "on" 24 hours a day, and a mistake can so easily be deadly when deadly means are everywhere and impulsively accessible. People easily argue that a lion tamer is taking his life in his hands by entering an environment with an unpredictable and potentially deadly animal but they don't seem able to translate that into being in a public space with an unpredictable number of strangers in unpredictable states of mind and access to instantly deadly means of acting out.

The person also said the suspect, Jeremy Powell, was not handcuffed during the questioning.

Alone in an interrogation room with a murder suspect, and the suspect isn't in restraints?
