You know what always happens when Daddy gambles with the Rent Money?
Sooner or later, we lose our house and wind up sleeping on the street.
It is inevitable.
Nobody WINS forever.
"Well, it was a good run while it lasted!"
It doesn't matter how GOOD a gambler President Obama is.
Even Bobby Fischer lost at Chess occasionally.
If President Obama keeps pushing Social Security into the pot,
sooner or later, it won't come back,
and THEN, it will be gone forever.
Sooner or Later.
This President or the next.
There is also the collateral damage.
Not so long ago, Social Security was the inviolate 3rd Rail of Politics,
Touch It and you DIE!!!!.
Thanks to President Obama, this TABOO has been lifted.
No Republican could have lifted the TABOO on publicly calling for cuts to Social Security.
Social Security has NOW been diminished to just another chip on the table in the Big Game of MORE profits for the already RICH.
Social Security will NOW be On-the-Table in every future budget "Negotiation" until it is gone.
The precedent HAS been established.
This deflowered virgin can't be unscrewed.
"Well, it was a good run while it lasted!"

(62,325 posts)on reading their minds. I want to hear their opinions stated clearly. On on issue as important as SS, the VP most definitely should be upfront about his opinons. This is not like asking someone to take any risk, politically. SS is a cornerstone of the Dem Party, one of the most popular and successful, life-saving programs ever. If the President is straying from Democratic values, then yes, the VP either should speak to him privately, tell him 'I cannot go along with this' and then, if that fails, stand up for the people. So he may lose his job, we need to know if defending SS would lose him his job, but if that were to happen, he would be almost a shoe-in for President certainly among Democrats.
But so far I have heard nothing from him regarding this whole debacle. To be a good leader, you have to have courage. Staying quiet and/or supporting bad policies does not tell me that someone has courage.

(39,909 posts)The President from MBNA would NEVER side with the Big Banks.
During the years that Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. was helping the credit card industry win passage of a law making it harder for consumers to file for bankruptcy protection, his son had a consulting agreement that lasted five years with one of the largest companies pushing for the changes, aides to Senator Barack Obamas presidential campaign acknowledged Sunday.

DU is not the ideal place to attack Hillary Clinton.
DonCoquixote
(13,615 posts)it sure does not stop people from attacking everyone from as far left as Bernie Sanders to even Obama himself. Of course, unless you imply there is some sort of threat. If so, talk it over with the many people whom I have had agruments with over Hillary, and still retain friendships with, buit in real life, and on here.
PS: If Hillary wants to promise to keep SS off the table, or to revisit Nafta, or to renew Glass Stegall, or revist our alliance to Israel, no one is stopping her, indeed, NOW WOULD BE THE TIME.
And, if she were do do any of that, I will be right next to you in the "hillary 2016 headquarters" t-shirt and all.

REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)
ALERTER'S COMMENTS:
I don't know about you, but where I come from, "gambling with the rent money" is a racist statement. These kinds of racial stereotypes should not be permitted on DU.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Apr 5, 2013, 05:30 PM, and the Jury voted 0-6 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: You need to get out more.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: HOGWASH! I don't know where the alerter comes from, but it doesn't matter where he is from, he is making up stuff. Another frivolous alert, wasting people's time.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: What? Gambling isn't a problem with only one racial group. Some people leave a pile, but this is an entire dump truck full of manure!
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: What silly horsehockey-of-an-alert.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: As it turns out you can DUrec a thread while reviewing it as a juror.
And, no, there's nothing racist about it, it cuts across all races.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.
Thank You.

(27,787 posts)I could see some one pointing out that this thread is basically a duplicate of about 20 others today, but there doesn't seem to be any reason for an alert.
If you're going to make some totally out there statement that makes no sense and expect an alert to succeed, you need to back it up with references.
Edit: I'll admit I didn't notice this was your own post and you were complaining about it having been alerted on, so just read the above as criticizing whoever did alert :-D Sorry.
Pretty much every criticism of Obama now is called racist. It's time for real dems to find a new representative.

(6,234 posts)Our own guy apparently cannot go a week without saying that Social Security needs to be cut.
Not defense, not wars, not handouts to mega-corps... social security. So far as I can tell he has fought harder to cut social security than any other policy proposal he has ever made. He's not fighting for single payer, he's not fighting to close GITMO, he's not fighting to jail bankers, he's not fighting to raise the minimum wage, he's not fighting for a real infrastructure stimulus bill, he's fighting to destroy social security.
Not cut it, destroy it. That's what Chained CPI does. It's worse than any single cut, because it's a guaranteed cut every single year forever.

(7,521 posts)The first time I ever went to a race track was with a couple who were betting (and losing) rent money- and they had three kids. I really enjoyed going to the track, but I never went back with them.
If Obama gets chained cpi passed, I would also expect the Democratic Party to split up. A lot of people remain Democrats mostly because the Republicans are unacceptably worse. That's a weak bond and the chained cpi would be a deal breaker for many.

(9,214 posts)The truth is that we have more in common with the rank and file Republicans than we do our own party's top echelon. The rank and file Republicans have more in common with the rank and file Democrats than they do with the top echelon in their party.
If we would realize we have the same problems and that it is only small differences in the solutions we differ on, we could get rid of all of the 1%ers in government that are working against all the rest of us.

When he renewed the Patriot Act and signed NDAA.. well... it's over.

We must have been neighbors.
My Wife & I lived on houseboats in a small bohemian houseboat community on the Mississippi River at St Paul below the abandoned power plant off Shepard Road.
Gawd, we loved it there.
Then the "developers" moved in in 2003 and decided that Condominiums belonged there instead of us.
That was the end of THAT.
