We all knew the GOP would reject the proposals by the President.

So why wouldn't it have been more beneficial for the President to propose eliminating the cap and lowering the retirement age. Many are saying the current proposal that was rejected will be great on the campaign trail in 2014. Maybe a slogan like "We tried to cut Social Security, they just wanted to cut it more". It would have been better if they spent the next two years arguing the benefits of eliminating the cap and lowering the retirement age. The Democrats would then be seen as fighting for seniors, with the GOP attacking them. With the current proposal, the Democrats get to say that the GOP wants to hurt you more than we do. This was not chess.

The public perception, which a lot of politics is about, is also awful in this case. A Democratic President willing to put Social Security cuts on the table. That will be remembered more than the GOP saying it wasn't enough.

That should not be how the Democrats address Social Security.

2. This proposal may have made the GOP look bad, BUT..........

......It also has made the idea of cutting SS and entitlement spending more mainstream. Whether or not the Republicans accepted the proposal or not, it has had that effect. Cutting Social Security is going to be perceived as less and less extreme from now on, should proposals like this continue.

I have posted similar sentiment multiple times. That really is the biggest problem moving forward. It should be viewed as an extreme right wing position. Clearly it is not.

and neither do I. there no way to spin this a a victory, as some are trying to do. make the republicons look foolish?! THEY are doing a great job of that all by themselves. and you are sooooooo right: if the white house knew the proposal to cut SS would be rejected, then why NOT propose eliminating the cap?
and of course, republicons will use this to attack democrats...why would they pass on such a great gift?
