Kansas: Bill legalizing switchblades passes Senate

TOPEKA — With little discussion and no dissent, a bill to legalize switchblade knives in Kansas passed the Senate on Wednesday and is expected to move to final approval in a House vote Thursday.

The bill takes switchblades and stilettos off the state’s list of banned weapons. Sharpened throwing stars were also being considered for legalization but removed at the last minute by a House-Senate conference committee.

I have wondered over the years why spring assisted folding knives were illegal. I have suspected it, like many prohibitions, was aimed at an uppity ethnic group. But what makes a spring assisted knife any more dangerous than a fixed blade hunting knife or a regular pocket knife for that matter? I have carried a thumb opening knife for several years when hunting, camping or working in the yard. I don't know if I would ever carry a spring assisted knife, but might buy one just to have if the prohibition is lifted..

you to carry about any kind of knife you'd like. If I was somewhere and someone was threatened, I'd much rather they were pulling out a knife to defend themselves than a gun.
