Consider . . . .

. . . . . when the sanitation workers were on strike in Memphis, when Dr. King went there in support, on the day he was shot, the wage they found too low, adjusted for inflation, would be $11.00 per hour. Dr. King called them - rightly so - starvation wages.

Consider . . . . $11.00 per hour was an inadequate wage 1968. And we have lost ground since then.

The strikers today in New York are seeing their minimum wage at $7.25 per hour.

This is not actually a problem caused by corporations. It is a problem caused by politicians. No matter how you slice it, it comes back to elected officials. Are they bribed? So what. Someone had to TAKE the bribe. Is the pressure on them too great from their low tax constituents? So what? Wages so low a person literally cannot survive on them is morally wrong. Factually, it costs taxpayers to allow such low wages.

In the richest country on earth, there is no defensible reason not to have a living minimum wage.

The signs below were being worn in Memphis that awful day in 1968.

The same signs were being worn today in New York City.

my kids are trying to get launched, and you just can't live on what they make. $10/hr was good money 30 years ago. i can't believe that people still work for that.
all we have to do is pass a damn law. it would solve so many problems. the downsides are completely made up.
there is only one answer. who calls the tune?
