No link as of yet. A spokesman is apparently going to issue a statement in the next ten minutes and I'll update when more information is available.

6:56 p.m.: A Jackson police officer and a murder suspect are dead in the Jackson police headquarters, Chief Rebecca Coleman said.

She said police made an arrest this afternoon of a murder suspect, “and he was being interviewed on the third floor. Later, we heard that shots had been fired, and upon our arrival, we found the suspect is deceased and we have a police officer who is deceased. That’s all the information we have at this time.”

Reporter R.L. Nave is on the scene outside the Jackson Police Department downtown where officers confirmed to media that both a JPD officer and a suspect are dead inside on the third floor. A homicide detective was interviewing a murder suspect on the 3rd floor when shots were fired, police say, and both the suspect and a police officer died from gunshot wounds.

We're getting reports that were texted from people who were inside the building that it was a homicide detective interviewing a suspect who managed to get his gun. We have a name for the officer, but will not report it until independently confirmed and until family has been notified.

It's a sad situation but few facts out. Apparently the detective was questioning a murder suspect and people heard shots. Both were "found dead". It's very bizarre that the guy got past security checks and I guess the facts will come out.

I feel sad about this, but it does underscore the idea that if everyone is armed the "bad guys" won't shoot people is absurd.
