ACTION FROM AMERICAN FAMILY VOICES:
Friend -
For the last few months, lawmakers have thrown around the ideas of chained CPI and changing the CPI to balance the budget. But what does that actually mean?
It means cuts to Social Security, and a kick in the gut to elderly Americans and their caregivers.
The CPI is a formula involving inflation and the cost of living; benefits for Social Security are based on that CPI. What chained CPI means is chaining the cost of living to the today's current costs, and not adjusting them as things like gas, rent, food and other basics become more expensive.
The White House is considering chained CPI to balance the budget, to compromise in a grand bargain. This isnt a grand bargain. This is an awful idea.
Together, we can stop this. Call the White House at 202-456-1414 and tell them: no cuts to Social Security.
We need to tell the President that making cuts to these programs is taking a step backwards it would be terrible policy, and terrible politics. We cannot allow this grand bargain to strip away our benefits.
The White House will release its budget in the next few days.
Our national budget should show our values, including financial security for ourselves and our families. If we stick together, we can find a better solution for our budget without making these awful cuts.
So we need your help now. Call the White House at 202-456-1414 and tell them: no cuts to Social Security.

SENATOR SHERROD BROWN'S CALL FOR ACTION
Dear Friend,
Good news: The Senate voted down the radical Ryan Budget the House sent over.
Bad news: That's not going to be enough to stop efforts to end Medicare as we know it.
This is the third time in as many years extreme Republicans have tried to turn Medicare into a voucher system. And trust me, it won't be the last.
We need to keep fighting. It's the only way to protect our seniors, protect our working families, and make sure we have the resources it takes to keep winning.
I still need your help. Click here to add your name and tell radical Republicans to stop attacking Medicare and start working toward real solutions.

This year's version of the Ryan Budget went down on a bipartisan basis, but the special interest groups that fuel these radical ideas -- the same ones that spent millions of dollars attacking us last year -- haven't gone anywhere.
Their next attack on our seniors, or our working families, is just around the corner. And we need to be there to stop them.
Make sure your voice is heard. Add your name to the petition right now. And if you can, consider contributing a few dollars to help us grow our grassroots support.
Thank you for helping me stand up for seniors and families.

(84,711 posts)having seen them do little under Bush Administration...or the Obama Administration...because the Impact has been Diluted as "Petition Signers will Sign Anything" (so the WH and REPUG'S SAY TO TRASH all us PETITION SIGNERS)...(the Public Relations Campaign against CITIZEN ACTION) ....BUT...that said...I signed Sherrod Brown's Petition BECAUSE he will read the Signatories on the SENATE FLOOR...as to HOW MANY RESPONSES he GOT.
I thought that Senator Brown's Petition was an effort I wanted to make, and I hope that others will find this worthwhile, also
Just Saying.
HERE's His Post and all I can say is that I signed it.

(84,711 posts)I think if he gets enough signatures and reads the amount on Senate Floor it's worth something...that I would do!
I realize that there are so many DU'ers who are so discouraged they don't believe that anything other than Mass Insurrections can work these days...that We've done all that WORK here on DU by so Many of our Activists and not seen the results we HOPED...doesn't mean we GIVE UP...
I still have some life left in me...and I don't want to go to my GRAVE thinking I didn't WORK HARD ENOUGH... (Sorry for Melodramatics...but "Picking and Choosing" what one supports is IMPORTANT. I thought this was IMPORTANT ....Brown's Petition...was something I felt compelled to do.....because he's very Liberal..and he's a Senator...and he will get CREDIT if he comes in with HUGE SIGNATURES to stand on the Senate Floor against the Repugs.
I hope people will sign...and that it GIVES A MESSAGE!

(62,325 posts)it different. At least they should not be allowed to shut the voices of the people out altogether as they so often do.
Let them know we are here and we are watching and hopefully a few of them, if there are enough signatures, will start to remember who they are supposed to represent.
Your sincere request is respected by me, Koko. Thanks for all you.

(84,711 posts)read on Senate Floor. I like Sherrod Brown...but..I'm alwys cautious.
But I respect him in the Senate...more than I RESPECT a "Call to the White House Hot Line...these DAYs.
So ...I do what I can do...and "Chime in and Out" of this whole Melt Down.. But, the YOUNG AMONGST
US ...MUST DO MORE! We cannot carry you on our BACKS ...Much longer...
Just saying:
this about the Republican budget, what about the President's budget? He is likely appeasing them by offering up cuts to benefits for seniors and the disabled. You expect the GOP to do mean and greedy things but it is painful that our President would even consider this.

(84,711 posts)and gave up on that after the 2000 Selection, Pre-Iraq Invasion...and decided it was better to go with the ONLINE ACTIVIST CALLS for WEIGHT! Got discouraged with that in Bush II and Obama I...but, am now thinking that SS/MEDICARE PRESERVATION is WORTH ONE LAST TRY to go the PETITION ROUTE... (Sorry for Full Cap Shouting at you...just for emphasis...but, I worry that all of us are GIVING UP...

(3,102 posts)...I think Obama couldn't care less what we think but I keep trying. The last time I called I talked to an operator who was just as upset about Obama wanting to cut SS as I was.

(57,936 posts)Many, many older people do not use the internet.
You would be surprised at the numbers of people over 50 who are not internet users.
In LA, the City is announcing certain community meetings and other information only on the internet. Older people are shut out. They sit around watching Fox News because that's what they've been doing forever.
And now comes this huge threat to their lives and they don't know what is going on and can't sign the petitions.
The President knows what he is doing on this. Older people are in the dark and defenseless. They are easy marks.
For shame, President Obama.
I for one do not sign petitions to the White House because I do not remember my password for that website. Why you need a password for it is beyond me. Maybe it is intended to exclude signatures from older people who did not grow up with the habit of remembering a lot of passwords. Anyway, there is a huge generation gap, and the children of the elderly will pay for it.

He will go down in history, but not the way he wants.
Can we FINALLY get an admission from the Obama Cheerleaders that he has sold us out?

(5,400 posts)The administration doesn't have to worry as much about an angry electorate as the Republicans do. Ironically, by making an extremely loud noise about this we Democrats might get Republicans to think twice about this.
The administration gets a rest in a few more years. The Republicans would have to live with voting for cutting SS forever.
Ditto that for what relatively few Democrats go along.
