Saudi paralysis sentencing 'grotesque' - UK

The UK has urged Saudi Arabia not to carry out a reported sentencing of paralysis for a Saudi man as punishment for paralysing another man.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said London was "deeply concerned" by the sentence, describing it as "grotesque".

Such punishment was "prohibited under international law", the official added.

Saudi media reports earlier said the 24-year-old man could be paralysed from the waist down if he could not pay his victim £250,000 in compensation.

Ali al-Khawahir was 14 when he stabbed a friend in the back in the Eastern Province town of al-Ahsa. He has been in prison for 10 years.

I wonder if this community would use this type of extremism to right the crimes against the poor? midnight Apr 2013 #2

Money has always solved everything over there:

Saudi media reports earlier said the 24-year-old man could be paralysed from the waist down if he could not pay his victim £250,000 in compensation.

There is another "out" for the guy--if the victim says he doesn't want the guy to suffer the quisas (retribution), then the government might accede to the wishes of the victim. That doesn't always work, though.

The truth of the matter is that it's not might that makes right, it's wealth. If this kid were wealthy he could have killed his little friend and not done a day in jail with a generous payment to the family.

The punishment- to take away all their wealth? Probably not... Just another day of extremism carried out by the wealthy around the world....
