US to deploy missile defense system in Guam

The US Defense Department is set to deploy a new advanced missile-defense system to Guam to counter the threat of a North Korean attack.

The Pentagon said on Wednesday that it will deploy the movable system known as a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense battery, or THAAD, to the Pacific island in the coming weeks.

It says the planned deployment is a precautionary move to shield residents and US forces in Guam against a North Korean missile attack.

North Korea's recent provocative rhetoric included a warning of missile attacks on the US mainland and its base in Guam.

In the latest of its threats, the North announced early on Thursday that it informs the US that it approved a military operation involving a nuclear strike.
