"West Virginia sheriff was slain today by a gunman who walked up to his SUV"

"West Virginia sheriff was slain today by a gunman who walked up to his SUV and shot him point-blank, authorities say.

The lawman was Mingo County Sheriff Walter E. "Eugene" Crum, 59, said Marsha Dadisman, director of communication for the state Department of Health and Human Services.

The Williamson Daily News reported that Crum was in his sport-utility vehicle in downtown Williamson when a man drove into the parking lot, approached his SUV and shot him point-blank.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin issued a statement, saying in part: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Crum family.""

...it's too bad that he didn't have a gun to protect himself.

I know this kind of response gets old but no more so than the idiocy of the argument it parrots.

...the only viable solution to gun violence was to advocate having more guns.

Are you suggesting there might be circumstances of gun violence where "if only the victim had a gun" is NOT the solution ?

day-um...I never thought of that.

It's a disturbing trend, all the law enforcement kills lately (basically starting with Dorner), but apparently there's more to solving the problem than just arming everybody. There's always situations where, regardless if everyone's armed, a good guy or an innocent gets killed. That's why the solution needs to be found elsewhere from simply "arming everyone".

State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous said identified the shooting suspect as Tennis Melvin Maynard, 37.

Baylous said Maynard fled after the shooting. Deputies spotted the man's vehicle in Delbarton and pursued him. Maynard then got out of the vehicle with a handgun and was shot multiple times by police. He was flown to Cabell-Huntington Hospital for treatment and is in police custody there.
