I agree. Lawrence was respectful & professional but you could see how former Rep. Hutchinson was completely demoralized by the end of the interview. Last week Lawrence had Rewrite on Grover Norquist that was compelling & 1 comment on the MSNBC Last Word Blog was wondering why Huff. Post & other sites did not pick up.

I saw it too. How about instead of arming everyone, make the class doors lock from the outside. Even if it means remodeling schools so even if a nut were to get on campus, the class doors wouldn't open. Even invest in locks that can't be shot open. It may be expensive, but in the long run so is having an armed guard.

schools & they would have the attitude that it would 'cost too much'.

Hutchinson's solution is meant to drum up more gun purchases -- damn the safety of students. That's coming from an ex-prosecutor.

maybe a central lock control that can be remotely activated all at once from the principals office in extreme situations like this. I can see some problems but they probably could be figured out by better people than me. The overall safety of the students would increase immensely.

When Lanza entered the Sandy Hook he walked right past the first classroom even though it was filled with children. Why, you ask? Because the week before they had a school drill for an armed gunman and part of that drill was to cover the window in the classroom door with black construction paper. That paper was still in place and Lanza walked right past that classroom so simple things like dead-bolts and window shades are low cost, effective preventative measures. Not sure why some of these things haven't already been done given how many school shootings there have been over the years. That may not be that much help for a situation like Virginia Tech where the shooter was a student with access to the classroom but that would never be the case for an elementary school.

Lots of teachers won't let kids go to the bathroom when they need to, for whatever condition. They are jailers. This would make it worse.

Some schools have adopted policies where a student can only go to the bathroom THREE TIMES per class in one semester.

Half the students who are female are going to need to go to the bathroom a lot more often than that. I know. I was in that situation over forty years ago. I argued with a teacher that was gonna suspend me over being late to class at noon during the break between classes, b/c I had to tend to my hygiene at that time of the month. The school was huge and we didn't have enough time between classes. I told him he could call my mother up and talk about it.

"Kids already pee, crap, barf and bleed on themselves as it is."

in high school, there was a 15 minute rule, where nobody was allowed in the hallways within 15 minutes after class starts, and 15 minutes before it ends. At least in college, a person has more freedom and can skip class and use the bathroom when they want.

And I went to a huge high school with 3,500 students. There was not enough time to go to the bathroom between classes and hit your locker to change books and walk to class.

It was completely insane. It was one of the stupid things that made me crazy in high school.

Many a day I did not go to the bathroom at all, all day. school started at 8 am and was over at 3:40 pm. Sometimes I had a three-hour lab once a week that started at 7 am.

The work world isn't any better.

I had to beg a judge more than once for a lunch break so I could eat lunch when we were in a hearing or trial. I was a court reporter. One judge backed down when I said "My doctor's name is Dr. such n such. Do you want his phone number so you can call him & talk to him about my needing to eat lunch?"

That is so demeaning to have to beg for bathroom breaks and lunch breaks from slave drivers.

...just so your child can go to the bathroom. If parents did this when schools get restrictive then things would change. Incontinence is classified as a disability.

That said, I don't remember this kind of problem at school - probably because we did have time between classes, a short morning recess and a decent lunch hour (usually more for extra curricular activities held in school).

38. That would make menstruation a DISABILITY!!
Wed Apr 3, 2013, 11:33 AM
Apr 2013

It's a natural function and ALL teenage girls have to deal with it!!
That would be HALF the population of the average high school.

Menstruation is definitely a periodic disability for many girls and women, but schools and work places don't deal with it.

Can you tell I'm angry from being disabled by a NATURAL BODILY FUNCTION from ages 12 to 55?? And not having teachers/bosses allow me to stay home and be sick from cramps, curled up in severe pain and feeling like a dishrag, or even try to prevent me from going to the bathroom? It's either that, or bleed all over myself.

Doctors give you this line about how you're supposed to stay active, keep functioning, blah blah, but some women are seriously disabled 13 times a year for 2 to 4 days. That's a lot of time for illness that MUST be
dealt with.

And, no, no treatments helped any. I would not have a hysterectomy. That's quite radical.

I can tell your anger... I'm pointing out it would be sad that an IEP would be the *only* way to deal with it. For my eldest son, he is incontinent at age 10, and yes he has to have an IEP in place to deal with his issue.

It is sad that it does come to this. IEPs, asking for accommodations per the ADA, filing for FMLA leave...

I'm not a big fan of how the school system around here is structured. A morning start before 9am... no mini-breaks... recess is only 3 days a week, the other two days it is turned into PE. Lunch time is such a rush. And summer vacations are so bloody long ... 3 months??? This is just elementary school! I have yet to experience through my sons' eyes middle and high school and I am not looking forward to them as a dad.

As for the workplace... it is getting a medical professional to define ones condition as a disability and asking an employer to make "reasonable accommodations" under the ADA. If it is a larger employer, FMLA can help after a years' service and required hours worked.

It's just pathetic.

Hutchinson was allowed way too much time to babble on at a contrived slow pace. Very annoying, and filled with lies and subterfuge. And, as I predicted would happen (to myself), O'Donnell was shamed for "interrupting."

I found it frustrating to watch.

Edited to add: I did enjoy that LOD knew the members involved in the "task force" all stood to gain from the outcome. Just felt frustrated that Hutchinson was able to drone on and on. They all do it, scream "interruption!" And get away with making the host look rude/wrong. Boils my blood. Same tactics ALL the time.

Like if he just talked long enough, saying nothing or repeating talking points, he'd get the final word because LOD would be forced to break for a commercial and not have time to respond.

I did like that long, awkward pause after LOD thanked him for being on the show, though. You could tell Asa was pissed.

So the NRA hires this slimebag to act as a fig leaf for the NRA on these purportedly unbiased recommendations for school security and Asa does not think how much the NRA paid him is any of our business?!

LO did great prep work on the other members of this NRA task force. They are basically all people who stand to make money off the recommendations. And not a single educator on the task force!

And after LO runs out of time, he thanks Asa for coming. But Asa just sits there and glowers at him. No "you're welcome, " not even a perfunctory "thanks for having me on"...not even a "Good night." Asa was such a tool.

But I'm glad I came here. It was nice to see Lawernce make Hutchison look the asshat that he is. And a lowlife for working for the other POS La Pierre. As a former reporter, it is very telling of an individual when they are clearly BSing you after asking a simple, straightforward question. I hated that.

But remember, LOD had asked La Pierre to come on, and apparently always refused.
