Greenland’s new government puts the brakes on more offshore drilling

A no to any increase in offshore drilling, but a yes to more mining — with conditions.

That’s what Greenland’s new premier Aleqa Hammond said last week as she prepared to officially take office April 5.

Her government’s position represents a change from the previous stance taken by former Premier Kuupik Kleist, who promoted oil and gas development for Greenland.

... “We must protect the environment, and future large-scale projects must take the utmost respect for the environment,” Hammond said.
