Michigan: GOP Lawmakers Look Into Undoing Prevailing-Wage Law

The state's prevailing-wage law prevents out-of-state contractors from undercutting Michigan employers and keeps local projects local, one local union representative said.

Some GOP lawmakers claim the law only increases the cost of taxpayer-funded construction projects and are seeking repeal of the 1965 law, however.

The state's prevailing-wage law guarantees workers on state and public school projects are not paid below the prevailing hourly rate or benefits for construction projects in communities that the projects are located in.

Genoa Township resident and electrical union official Grace Trudell said prevailing-wage projects make up more than half of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 58 contracts.

Trudell said the prevailing wage law made it possible for her to keep her Chilson Road home throughout the building-bust recession. She shares her home with her fiance and 6-year-old son.

I'd like to know why.

Michigan sits literally in the middle of the largest free-standing fresh water supply on the planet.

I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
