Fox thinks poverty in America is too sexy

Fox thinks poverty in America is too sexy
4/1/2013
http://americablog.com/2013/04/fox-news-obama-poverty-comfortable-video.html

I know I try to run my business into the ground every day, just on the oft-chance that maybe, if I’m lucky, I too can join the ranks of the poor. Yes, that’s the latest from Fox News: President Obama is making it too “comfortable” to be poor in America.

Here’s what Fox News contributor Charle Payne told Saturday’s broadcast of “Cavuto on Business”:

“There’s this idea that between the food stamps and the welfare and the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit and the local programs, you know, it gets a little comfortable to be in poverty. Listen, I’ve lived it first hand. I’ve seen when people don’t go to work because they get everything paid for them. The incentive is not there.”

In the world of Fox, poverty is fake, it simply doesn’t exist. By Fox logic, America is a rich country, so if you’re poor, it simply has to be your fault. And the biggest problem, of course, isn’t the record number of poor. Oh no. It’s that Democrats have made poverty too sexy a prospect, so now everyone’s doing it!

It hardly matters to Fox if the reason a lot of Americans are now “takers” is because they were bankrupted by the aftermath of the imaginary prosperity of the Bush years.

It’s too bad that Fox doesn’t care nearly as much about the “takers” at Big Oil and on Wall Street. But in Fox’s mind, those people are hard-working capitalists who deserve all the corporate welfare they can get. Never mind the $83 billion per year given to them by the federal government (or is it $780 billion?) What nearly a trillion dollars a year among Fox and friends.

Corporations ship our jobs out of country, and lay off the local workers.
Vulture corporations like Walmart move in, and pay the laid off workers,
about 40% of their previous wage, which Walmart knows that the
workers can't refuse because they need the money.

Since the workers are now getting paid so little, they need a 2nd or
maybe even a 3rd job to equal the income they've grown used to.

So you end up with 10,000 applicants for 90 jobs.
A race to the bottom.

When one of my right wing friends complain about this, I just tell them,
"Keep voting republican, a$$hole"

And it’s the Red States that take in more money than they pay into the federal system - we call that “taking” - but in their minds, it’s the other people who are freeloading.

Where would the money be found to subscribe to cable or satellite? I guess fox can criticize away because those who are comfortable in poverty won't hear them any way.

In Right Wing World you can easily get a raise if you have the spine to go into your boss's office and ASK for it.

There are PLENTY of middle class parents that treat their kids as failures for not making the money they make.

I recently saw a facebook conversation where this phenomenon was glaringly obvious. Someone posted a personally written plea to stop bad-mouthing welfare recipients, and bravely offered the news that she herself had needed welfare once. The comments from her RW friends were interesting. Supportive yes, but totally lacking in critical thinking.

They think that if someone is poor, it's because they did not work hard enough or are too lazy.

It was the whole foundation for Romney's campaign. These people blame the poor for the housing collapse. They blame workers for jobs being shipped over seas. Go over to freerepublic and see for yourselves.

People choose poverty, illness or other misfortune, because it brings them lots of privileges!

Here is a song that I wrote a couple of years ago about our viciously right-wing Secretary for Work and Pensions, Iain Duncan-Smith (who once co-authored an article on 'Compassionate conservativism' with Rick Santorum). Sadly, it describes him just as much today, and his policies are getting worse and worse.

IAIN DUNCAN-SMITH'S SONG OF COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATIVISM

Oh, poverty’s a dreadful thing,
A sorrow and a shame.
It causes so much misery.
Someone must be to blame!
And who’s to blame is very clear.
Of one thing we are sure:
There never could be poverty,
If ‘twas not for the poor!

Some people choose to earn a lot,
And live in mansions fine.
They always eat the best of food
And drink the best of wine.
We’re glad they made this lifestyle choice.
It should be made by more.
Too many cause their own downfall,
By choosing to be poor!

Just think of Labour’s cruelty,
A model to avoid!
They gave too many benefits
To sick or unemployed.
That only reinforced their sin,
And made them do it more.
You just encourage poverty
When you reward the poor!

Oh, poverty’s a dreadful thing,
A scourge throughout the land.
It’s just like an addictive drug.
As such, it should be banned.
It’s really for poor people’s good,
That we’ve big cuts in store.
A big deterrent’s what they need
To make them not be poor!

have been poor for generations and may have their spirits broken and dont get the education and training to break the cycle, but even if we assumed they didnt want to get out of poverty, which is insane, it doesnt matter. There are no jobs for them. There are middle class workers and especially over 50 middle class workers that are losing their jobs. These people are not comfortable living in poverty yet THERE ISNT ANY CHOICE. There are no jobs.

I hope the above doesnt give the impression that I believe the poor are comfortable because I know different. I work with the poor and I know they are not comfortable. Some are not employable because of health or age conditions. But some are more than willing to work and do work at the food bank where I volunteer. They are not lazy, they are constantly looking for jobs, and they are very generous, willing to help others that might be worse off than them.

The rich rationalize that the poor are poor by choice. It's a class-sociopathy.
