U.S. Criticizes ‘Unnecessary’ EU Rules On Genetically Modified Crops

The United States on Monday criticized “unnecessary” European Union rules against genetically modified US crop imports as it prepares to enter free-trade talks with the EU.

EU restrictions notably have resulted in delays in the approval of new GM traits “despite positive assessments by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA),” the US Trade Representative’s office said in a report on reducing trade sanitary barriers.

The USTR also criticized the EU for imposing “commercially infeasible requirements” on GE content in food products under EU Traceability and Labeling regulations.

“Foreign governments continue to impose discriminatory or otherwise unwarranted measures on US agricultural exports,” Demetrios Marantis, the acting USTR, said in a conference call.

Once again, if the safety of GMO's and everything else Monsanto is doing to our food in order to increase profits is so indisputable and incontrovertible....

Why do they need all this special legislative PROTECTION?

I thought he might be one of those swinging door fellows from Monsanto, but I couldn't find any direct link between Marantis and Monsanto. Doesn't mean there isn't a link, it just means I couldn't find it in a quick search.

Well, I hope the EU stands up to him. What can he do, sue them via a WTO rule or something? If so, EU might pay a fine, but they surely can't be made to comply and be forced into taking Monsanto's frankenfoods.

Everybody needs to tune into DemocracyNow.org today and listen to/or read the transcript on a very informative discussion on the controversial "Monsanto Protection Act" that slipped through as a rider with the funding bill that PO signed last week.

autism, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and numerous other disorders and diseases that were unheard of 30 years ago.

Corporate profiteers may big profits making us sick, and corporate profiteers make big profits pretending to make us well (that is, reduce and manage symptoms). We are a great example to those Europeans who would like to make sure they have safe food.
