WASHINGTON A significant part of the Republican Party's future rests on the shoulders of Raffi Williams, the 24-year-old son of Fox News' Juan Williams.
Not long after RNC chair Reince Priebus admitted his party has been unable to appeal to the youth and minorities, Raffi Williams got the job of selling the GOP to youth outlets and the African-American press as a deputy press secretary.
He admits making young and black voters consider voting Republican is a tall order. But Williams told BuzzFeed a visible African-American media outreach program can reap political rewards for the GOP beyond the black vote.
"I think it's a slow process. If you expect us to get a ridiculous amount of African-Americans in the next election, that's not going to happen probably," he said. "But we can start to make inroads, and the more inclusive we are as a party, the better optics we get to other demographics as well not just African-Americans and that helps us in the long run."

(19,877 posts)The Republican part refuses to change with the times, instead they try to change people to conform with their warped purity test.

(25,908 posts)I consider it likely that the majority of young Williams' neighbors & classmates, while growing up, vote repug - not to mention the influence of his father, who kisses the rump of privilege with great regularity.

Ponder that for a moment. Does anyone really believe that the Koch Bros, BushCo. and the Walton family are going to place a "significant" part of their criminal enterprise's future in the hands of 24yr. old Raffi Williams? LOL!
No, Raffi is going to be a well paid prop and that is about it.

(4,528 posts)He went to private high school and private college. None of those lower class public schools for him. This guy has never been around African Americans his entire life. I'm from Yonkers and there were not too many African Americans in Poughkeepsie in the 60's. He is really an oreo.

(4,107 posts)which was taped on April 5, 1987 called "Covering the South...". A very young Williams was on one of the panels espousing pretty liberal views. I guess success spoiled him..

(10,893 posts)of me wants to believe that Republicans genuinely want to reach out to us, but somehow I get the suspicion that the GOP is just using us in order to convince moderates and other swing voters that their party isn't full of bigots. The answer to the GOP's problem with garnering black support is staring them in the face, yet they still have yet to do what is necessary to win more of us to their side after about half a century of losing the black vote.
The GOP is really caught in a bind here. On one hand, they have a problem with minority support in general. But on the other hand, they risk angering the base of the party by doing too much to reach out. While the GOP base is pretty fiscally conservative, minorities in general are fiscally liberal.
