Daily newspapers start publication in Myanmar

The people of Myanmar are seeing privately owned newspapers for the first time in about 50 years, as the country takes another step toward democracy.

Readers hurried to newsstands in Yangon to buy copies of 4 new dailies that began publication on Monday.

Until now, only the state-run media was allowed to publish daily newspapers in Myanmar. Last year, the government announced it would stop censoring newspaper articles as part of the democratization process. So far, 16 daily newspapers have been granted permission to publish.

A man who came to buy a paper said the newspapers have so far been just government propaganda, but people in Myanmar finally have access to real information on what is happening.
