U.S. deploys stealth fighters from Okinawa to S Korea

Last edited Mon Apr 1, 2013, 11:47 AM - Edit history (2)

SEOUL —

The U.S. military said Monday it had deployed F-22 Raptor stealth fighters to South Korea as part of the ongoing “Foal Eagle” military exercise. The jets were flown out of the U.S. air base in Okinawa.

North Korea has already threatened to strike the U.S. mainland and U.S. bases in Japan and Guam in response to the participation of nuclear-capable U.S. B-52 and B-2 stealth bombers in this year’s exercise.

“We cannot tolerate the U.S. carrying out nuclear strike drills, setting us as targets, and advertising them as strong warning messages,” a spokesman for the North’s supreme army command said.

“The U.S. should not forget that the Andersen base ... as well as naval bases at Japan’s main island and Okinawa, are all within the range of our precision target assets,” he said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency.

S. Korea vows fast response to North; U.S. deploys stealth fighters

SEOUL--South Korea will strike back if the North stages any attack on its territory, the new president warned on April 1, as tensions ratcheted higher on the Korean peninsula amid shrill rhetoric from Pyongyang and the U.S. deployment of radar-evading fighters.

North Korea says the region is the brink of a nuclear war in the wake of United Nations sanctions imposed for its February nuclear test and a series of joint U.S. and South Korean military drills that have included a rare U.S. show of aerial power.

North Korea said on March 30 it was entering a "state of war" with South Korea in response to what it termed the "hostile" military drills being staged in the South.

But there have been no signs of unusual activity in the North's military to suggest an imminent aggression, a South Korean defense ministry official said last week.

5. The fear, I think, that if Kim is ignored or if North Korea's threats are just dismissed

as empty silly bluster, they'll decide to lash out--which has not met with military retaliation in the past. SK is politically different now, and refuses to tolerate even small attacks. A small attack now would go out of control, possibly. The safest way for us to respond back with a show of force is within the annual exercise, because they expect it. It's mostly a "hey, look at this". They take food and humanitarian aid from us, I don't think they're as fearful of us as they portray themselves.

or uncle of Kim's who is really running the show. Or it may mostly be him, but he's being pressured. Very hard to discern.

Having your armed to the teeth neighbor threaten invasion and destruction every few years when they don't get their way has to get old. That is no way to live and something I could see people getting sick of very quickly.

At some point, ROK is probably going to say enough is enough, let's get this over with already and end this.

we all take it like they don't mean it. So sooner or later the DPRK might decide that the bark has lost it's luster as well.
