Louisville's Ware breaks leg in tourney game

By MICHAEL MAROT
AP Sports Writer / March 31, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A gruesome injury that left Louisville guard Kevin Ware with a broken leg plunged Lucas Oil Stadium into horrified silence, with coach Rick Pitino wiping away tears and shocked teammates openly weeping during Sunday’s Midwest Regional final. Ware’s right leg bent in such an awkward and frightening angle that CBS stopped showing replays shortly after the fall in the NCAA tournament matchup against Duke.

‘‘The bone’s 6 inches out of his leg and all he’s yelling is, ‘Win the game, win the game,'’’ Pitino said. ‘‘I've not seen that in my life. ... Pretty special young man.’’ Viewers who watched the injury on TV reacted on social networks and (hash)KevinWare shot to one of the top worldwide trending topics on Twitter. Video of the injury was posted on YouTube — CBS initially replayed it twice before changing course.

With 6:33 left in the first half, Ware tried to contest a 3-pointer by Tyler Thornton. Ware’s leg buckled when he landed, bending almost at a right angle. School officials said Ware was taken to Methodist Hospital with a broken lower right leg. Louisville spokesman Kenny Klein said hospital officials told the school that Ware was ‘‘resting comfortably’’ and that the pain was ‘‘under control.’’ Klein said a team of doctors was being assembled.

One of Ware’s teammates and closest friends, Chane Behanan, spoke with Ware at halftime. ‘‘He said ‘Don’t worry about me, I'm good, I'll have my surgery tonight,'’’ Behanan said. ‘‘Go win it for me.’’ Pitino said Ware’s leg broke in two spots. ‘‘Basically, the bone popped out of the skin,’’ he said. ‘‘It'll take a year to come back.’’ Pitino said it was the same injury former Louisville running back Michael Bush had in football. Bush, now with the Chicago Bears, has recovered to have a productive NFL career.

Ware was taken off the court on a stretcher.

How they got their composure back and went on to stomp Duke, I'll never know...but I'm glad they did.

I was with my brother and father, who were watching the game at the time. It was the strangest thing as he jumped then fell down and just seemed to keep on collapsing down onto his back (I missed the twist of his leg at that point), I thought he'd injured his back or tailbone, as this was followed by a close up of his face in agony. My brother said, "Oh, my god! Don't look--" as they showed the playback because you could see the leg break and my brother knew I wouldn't be able to stomach that.

It was one of those injuries that apparently happens to football players but not to basketball players--he just had the terrible misfortune to come down from that jump in the most wrong way. It was gruesome and horrible and--need I say it?--left everyone from announcers to spectators shocked and stunned.

His fellow players huddled together as they couldn't huddle around him (everyone but the doctors had to stay back), hugging each other, and they and the coach broke down into tears. They got Ware onto a stretcher and everyone in the stands rose and showed their support by applauding him as he left. He had urged his team to play on, and they did their best, but it cast a terrible pall over the game.

I feel so bad for him. It's doubtful that he'll be able to come back from this injury, it was that bad a break, and he will be away for a long time recovering.

I was pass-blocking on a muddy field. The kid I was blocking turned away and instinctively vomited. I spent 13 weeks in a cast...was ready for the next season. He will be back.

I have suffered compound fractures. The whole region of injury goes into shut-down.

Hell, I would rather snap a femur than dislocate a shoulder or have a kidney stone.

Once the endorphins wear down...

We used to administer really good shit in the field.

In the NCAA basketball tournament yesterday, Louisville sophomore Kevin Ware suffered a gruesome injury: His leg bone literally tore through his skin.

Doctors say things are under control, but there will be a lengthy recovery.

While the NCAA makes over $780 million per year off student athletes, they do not guarantee that medical bills for injuries will be covered.

Can you sign our petition to the NCAA?

PETITION TO NCAA: "Kevin Ware and other student athletes should not suffer tens of thousands of dollars in health care costs from sports-related injuries. The NCAA should require schools to pay for universal health care for student athletes who suffer injuries."
