The shale army has arrived. Resistance is futile.
-- Bill Gwozd, v.p, of gas services for Ziff Energy.
I choose not to believe the second half of that statement.
The shale army is an accident-prone, carcinogen-dependent industry with no boundaries. The shale army seeks to use our land as its beachhead, our water as its battering ram, and our air as its receptacle for its toxic fumes. The proposed regs for New York are no defense. They do not prohibit flare stacks, open pits, or indefinite venting of toxic gases.
Resistance is not only necessary, it feels like a fundamental responsibility of parenthood.
There is nothing more important. Not your kid's soccer practice. Not your yoga class. Not your career. We still have a chance here-in the still unfractured state of New York-to stop a brutal and extreme form of fossil fuel extraction, to show the world how to build a green energy economy, and to help Governor Cuomo keep his promise to lead on climate change. All that necessitates saying NO to fracking. Our children's lives depend on our success.
-- Dr. Sandra Steingraber
On Wednesday, January 9, Governor Andrew Cuomo will be delivering his State of the State address in Albany, NY. There will be a large pro-environmental safety, anti-fracking rally from 11 am to 3 pm, outside the auditorium where Governor Cuomo is speaking. Should any forum members be in the Albany area, I would strongly recommend that they attend the rally.
Because most folks on the Democratic Underground are not in the Albany area, I would like to suggest another way that you can support our effort. Please call Governor Cuomos office, to let him know that you oppose hydrofracking. The number is:
(518) 474-8390
Calls should be made today, tomorrow, and on Wednesday. There are two important points to be made: first, the Governor should not make any decision until the results of his health-impact study are completed; and second, Governor Cuomo should consider the results of the epidemiology now being conducted in the village of Sidney (as reported upon on the front page of the January 3 edition of that communitys weekly newspaper, The Tri-Town News).
Thank you for your participation. And, if possible, I hope that you will consider assisting me in keeping this OP/thread current on the General Discussion forum.
Peace,

(14,910 posts)Your daily life can be affected by the disasterous practices of the gas industry by living hundreds of miles away.
Not only do watersheds not discriminate; the air quality is similarly affected through well flaring; which is a 24-hour process for 1-4 weeks when a new well is established; with little to no regulation on how clean these flares must be...
This process affects us ALL.
Agony
(2,605 posts)(b) No gas from any gas well, except such as is produced in a clean-up period not to exceed 48 hours after any completion or stimulation operation or workover , plus that used for the controlled testing of the well's potential in a period not to exceed 24 hours, plus that used in any operational requirements, shall be permitted to escape into the air.
The proposed regulations would allow gas wells to vent raw gas for up to 48 hours after completion, plus "48 hours" after stimulation (fracking), 48 after workovver, plus 24 hours test, plus more escaped gas "used in any operational requirements"
So 48 + 48 + 48+ 24 hours = 168 hours or 7 days of venting raw gas, plus an indeterminate length for "any operational requirements" which could be anything. So much for "green completions."

Details of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's plans to permit fracking in the state have emerged, via the New York Times.
Under the proposal as it now stands, fracking would be permitted only in counties in the southwest portion of the state, bordering PennsylvaniaBroome, Chenango, Steuben, and Tioga countiesand only then in towns which agree to allow fracking. Fracking would be banned in Catskill Park, in aquifer areas, and in national designated historic districts.

But I've got to sympathize with New Yorkers Against Fracking's Sandra Steingraber when she says (quoted by New York Times and Democracy Now!),
Sending a polluting industry into our most economically impoverished communities is a violation of environmental justice. Partitioning our state into frack and no-frack zones base on economic desperation is a shameful idea.

It's a shame we should have to ask the governor to await pertinent evidence before he makes a "decision" but.... there ya' go.

(73,333 posts)Thanks!
I had a lot of respect for his father. Mario had treated the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy well, even from the time he served under Gov. Carey. I had the opportunity to meet with him a couple of times on burial protection issues .... and met his personal attorney/ best friend in the Governor's office.
But the son is cut from a very different cloth. I know that he was considered a good operative for his father back then, but I always found him to be cold, calculating, and terribly ambitious. Andrew has had a "secret" committee working on his planned 2016 presidential bid for at least two years. In communications with his office (and with a family member), I've noted that unless he plans to run as a "Dick Cheney Democrat," he needs to side with the pro-environment people of the state. But he's as stubborn as he is ruthless -- and he is the first governor in our state's history who has refused to meet with the Iroquois' Grand Council of Chiefs. I think that says a lot about what type of human beuing he is.

(14,498 posts)I don't think it's just us.
For me, he puts the "creep" in "creepy".
In some respects he's what's wrong with the party: an increasing tilt toward all things corporate. You see it here and also on issues relating to schools/unions, etc. There's big $$ to consider there as well... and believe me, he's considering it.
But what's really creepy is his single-minded ambition. Ten years ago he was something of a joke in NYS politics as he was a perennial candidate for just about ANYTHING. Now that he's been sufficiently persistent and gained what once seemed the ultimate prize, the governorship,he's passed the simply narcissistic and is entering into the realm of megalomania. Even his personal relationships seem to be the consequence of advice from political consultants.
Yeah. Really, really creeeeepy.

(2,605 posts)Join Us for a Rally to Stop Fracking in NY at Governor Cuomos State of the State Address
(Scroll down for Bus and Transportation information)
The New Yorkers Against Fracking coalition is calling on all New Yorkers to come to Albany for a rally to keep fracking out of our beloved state. We will take our message right to the Governor as we gather outside the annual State of the State Address, delivered by Andrew Cuomo.
Weve never needed your voices more than now. On November 29th, the Department of Environmental Conservation took the reckless step of releasing draft rules and regulations that would sanction the process of fracking in New York State, thus setting the clock ticking on a decision-making process that, absent our intervention, could lead to permits in early 2013. Never mind that the environmental impact statement (sGEIS) that is supposed to serve as a scientific foundation of those regulations has not been released to the public. Never mind that the unfinished health review that is supposed to sit at the heart of the sGEIS is shrouded in secrecy. Never mind that the work of the health study is being carried out by three outside experts who are contracted for a mere 25 hoursthree daysof their time. Never mind that Governor Cuomo said NO to New Yorks own physicians and scientists who have demanded a transparent, comprehensive health impact assessment.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - More than a thousand protesters chanting "Ban Fracking Now!" are lining downtown Albany's Empire State Plaza concourse where lawmakers pass on their way to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's State of the State speech.
The protesters vastly outnumber landowners and business people who have also turned out to voice their support for natural gas development, walking through the concourse carrying "Friends of Natural Gas NY" placards.
Cuomo is weighing whether to allow shale gas drilling using high-volume hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, as state regulators near completion of a 4 ½-year environmental review. A Cuomo aide told an Albany radio station Wednesday morning that Cuomo won't specifically address fracking in his speech but will discuss broader energy issues.
Among the anti-fracking protesters in Albany are folk singer Pete Seeger and singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant.
