Sen. Kamala Harris On Being 'Momala'

https://www.elle.com/culture/career-politics/a27422434/kamala-harris-stepmom-mothers-day/

California Senator Kamala Harris announced in January that she would be running for president. But aside from being a United States Senator and a 2020 presidential candidate, she's also a stepmom to her husband Doug's children, Cole and Ella. In honor of Mother's Day, Sen. Harris writes about what it's like to be a stepmom—or, as her kids call her "Momala."

When I met Doug, the man who would become my husband, I also met a man who was a divorced father of two children, Cole and Ella, named after John Coltrane and Ella Fitzgerald. As a child of divorce, I knew how hard it could be when your parents start to date other people. And I was determined not to insert myself in their lives until Doug and I had established we were in this for the long haul. Children need consistency; I didn’t want to insert myself into their lives as a temporary fixture because I didn’t want to disappoint them. There’s nothing worse than disappointing a child.

So, we took it slow, and Doug and I put a lot of thought into when and how I would first meet the kids. And that meant waiting. As we waited, anticipation grew. When the day finally came, I had butterflies in my stomach. The plan was to go to a seafood hut off the Pacific Coast Highway called the Reel Inn, a favorite of the kids.

On my way to meet Doug, I picked up a tin of cookies and tied a ribbon in a bow around them. I took a few deep breaths. I was excited, and I was nervous. I rehearsed what I would say. Would the kids think the cookies were really nice or really weird? Was the ribbon too much? (The ribbon was probably a little extra, but over the years Cole and Ella have spared me by not telling me that.)

Cole and Ella could not have been more welcoming. They are brilliant, talented, funny kids who have grown to be remarkable adults. I was already hooked on Doug, but I believe it was Cole and Ella who reeled me in.

I wondered when this was going to get cleared up. I didn’t wanna be the one to do this, because I’m tired of being the resident Jewish translator for Yiddish expressions this month. 😂

Hit the nail on the head. I think there is a english word for a word that sounds like what it is..
Like the yiddish slang word "knaach".... a dent but not just a dent, more of a push. We grew up learning this stuff... It was great fun..

When I took German in college the teacher referred to those suffixes as "diminutives" to show affection. In English we tend to use the "EE" sound, and in German it was "...chen".
Or was it her own personal creation?

she spoke Yiddish primarily. She may have also known Czech because that's where she was originally from (Holocaust survivor), but I don't know. Whenever I was around her and her husband and friends, they spoke Yiddish.

It was definitely a term of affection as I only heard her use it with her 2 biological grandchildren.

It's a pronouncer!

If indeed the proper pronunciation of the first name of Joe Biden's pick for VP is "KOM-muh-la" (a video posted elsewhere here suggests: "COMMA-la&quot , then it underscores how you handle the first syllable. Rhymes with MOM-muh-la.

and some have used it as an insult. Some presidents and VPs in the past did not have children or even a spouse.

Taking such an interest in a candidate's personal and family life. Will we be treated soon to an in-depth article on how Donald Trump's family feels about his three marriages and five (that we know about) children? What's Donald like as a father, and how does he relate to his children not working in the White House?

And they consider Jews a separate, vile race.

But that fact should hasten their strokes and ❤️ attacks! A black/Asian woman with a Jewish husband.

The first male spouse on a presidential ballot is a Jew! Like me! Glad we made it to the party. Lol I was mindful during the primary that there were 2 Jewish men on the ballot that I could vote for. I didn't vote for either but it was great they made it there.

I'm now celebrating a female nominee who is multicultural in her own right, with a Jewish husband who adds to the mix.

And yes, it will add insult to injury to the racists! Ha!
Glad K and family have SS protection.
