UPDATE, 6 p.m.: In a letter sent to parents on Sunday, Paulding County Schools Superintendent Brian Otott wrote, As a result of our being informed of nine cases of COVID-19 at North Paulding High School following the first week of in-person instruction, along with the possibility that number could increase if there are currently pending tests that prove positive, we have consulted with the Department of Public Health and are temporarily switching the instructional model to Digital Learning at NPHS.The high school will have remote learning on Monday and Tuesday, Otott said.
He told parents, Tuesday evening parents and students will be notified of whether Digital Learning will continue, or if in-person instruction may resume. On Monday and Tuesday, the school will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, and the district will consult with the Department of Public Health to assess the environment and determine if there any additional close contacts for confirmed cases who have not already been identified.
UPDATE, 5:30 p.m. Sunday: North Paulding High School was closed to in-person learning Thursday and Friday. That was pre-planned to give administrators time to tinker with safety protocols after seeing them in action at the start of the week.
But on Sunday afternoon, district spokesman Jay Dillon said students there would start this week online too.

(115,280 posts)The virus doesn't stay viable on surfaces for very long; if people get it, it will be from breathing on each other. They need to talk to everyone the infected students were in contact with.

(25,750 posts)the schools fully open. Every single day I get more and more glad that I'm in New Mexico. Schools here are all going on-line for at least the first nine weeks, possibly longer. All of the public schools in this state. And probably all of the private and parochial ones also.
This is a state that closed down early and stayed closed down longer than most. It has paid off.

(25,750 posts)But I'm going to guess that most of them already have as many students as they can handle.
I really like living in a state with a good woman Democratic governor.

(25,750 posts)and lived in a state where they're saying the kids must attend in person, I'd be researching on-line schools and home schooling.

(25,750 posts)It's everyone wearing masks, plexiglass barriers at each desk, social distancing, lots of social distancing. Also some kind of reliable, fast test (5 minutes or less, maybe) that can be administered to every single person every single day.
People are NOT getting this from the virus lingering on surfaces. Having clean schools is great, but even dirty schools are not the transmission means of the virus.

(3,625 posts)The big problem is transmission of viral particles in the air. And that risk rises and falls based on the number of people gathered together and the distance between them.

(32,567 posts)There's no way around the fact that Georgia is a hot spot. The virus is raging unchecked due to immense stupidity and a lack of leadership at the state and national level. In-person school is not reasonable during this time unless they want to close down every week, which is probably worse than just doing it all online.

(1,235 posts)cases. Have they even done the basics of tracking down who these 9 people were in close contact with?
Another school in Georgia had a case and they made the whole class quarantine for 14 days. What is two days of cleaning going to do?
