Trump admitted on live TV he will 'terminate' Social Security and Medicare if reelected in November

President Donald Trump on Saturday afternoon openly vowed to permanently “terminate” the funding mechanism for both Social Security and Medicare if reelected in November—an admission that was seized upon by defenders of the popular safety net programs who have been warning for months that the administration’s threat to suspend the payroll tax in the name of economic relief during the Covid-19 pandemic was really a backdoor sabotage effort.
-------
“Trump’s executive order, which seeks to defer Social Security contributions, is bad enough,” said Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works. “But his promise to ‘terminate’ FICA contributions if he is reelected is a full-on declaration of war against current and future Social Security beneficiaries.”

“Social Security is the foundation of everyone’s retirement security,” Altman added. “At a time when pensions are vanishing and 401ks have proven inadequate, Trump’s plan to eliminate Social Security’s revenue stream would destroy the one source of retirement income that people can count on. Moreover, Social Security is often the only disability insurance and life insurance that working families have. If reelected, Trump plans to destroy those benefits as well.”

Emphasis mine

Of course he will do this if he gets a second term. He will destroy everything. Interesting that they took this nugget out of the clip they uploaded onto twitter - not a great message to his old angry white man part of the base - not sure how many them would stick with him - if as a great depression gets underway he promises to cancel the only secure income they may be able to depend on must give them pause for thought. At least one would hope so.

And I hope seniors are paying attention as well as those who will be retiring in the next 10 years or so. This effects everyone because, for those with a family, if SS is cut, who will need to pick up the slack?

Bush 43 blew all of his political capital on his attempt to abolish Social Security. His approval ratings plummeted and he never recovered.

Part of Trump, and a big part, wants to lose. This is political suicide.

Would Republican governors disenfranchise voters? You bet. They already have. Crippling the USPS also cripples voting by mail, which would be used more by seniors, a group whose support Trump has lost. Plus, African Americans and Hispanics are affected far more by the virus—two groups that do not support Trump and may not vote in person because of the virus, though Hispanic voters are more of a mixed bag. Voter suppression for both groups is also active in Republican states.

We know Russia is sowing disinformation everywhere to help Trump. What we don’t know is whether they can access voter databases as they did in 2016 and unregister Democrats. Or will they have access to voting machines to change votes? There are just a lot of possibilities, and Biden will need an overwhelming majority of votes to win.

Why in the world would he say or I should say, why would he threaten something like that now. Does he honestly think that will gin up more votes?!? Millions out of work, losing their housing, sick, dying and he decides it's a good time to add more gas to the inferno? WTF!!

We all know his ego is more important than the lives of our fellow citizens, so maybe he's doing a dump and run, so he doesn't have to face the jeers and insults of getting destroyed and embarrassed by Biden for the remainder of his pathetic life?

I hate the guy, if you couldn't tell. I still wouldn't be surprised if he bowed out, his ego and losing don't mix.

He tried it with the Affordable Care Act. Now he will do the same thing for Social Security and Medicare -- and the Post Office.

Plus, cutting off FICA not only means that the funds don't reach the government; they also won't reach the workers. Employers will just keep the money and not add to the salaries.

come from tRump. Mnuchin, McConnell and other greedy multi millionaires have these schemes, to make everyone but themselves wealthy. McConnell is kept in office by wealthy donors, especially to destroy these "entitlement programs". tRump is the one who came along at the opportune moment, to brazenly shove everyone out of the way, and make sure the wealthy get their way. He honestly has NO IDEA what these programs mean to working citizens, and retirees. As long as he gets free golf, travel, living and all the perks, he will do whatever it takes to stay in power. Also to avoid prison time, which he so richly deserves.

Vlad and the gop will skewer the votes. Hillary WON the last election, and we all know that. Putin paid enough to the gop to get their assistance in helping get his puppet into the WH. The gop is so beholden to Putin, a group of them even visited Moscow on July 4th last year! They likely would have made a return trip if not for the tRumpandemic.

Many factors will affect the outcome including voter suppression, hacking & fraud, Russian propaganda, GOTV, and messaging on the issues.

What we're talking about here is one particular issue and whether messaging on it will be a factor (one of many factors).

Will Trump's attempt to defund Social Security & Medicare and his pledge to do so in a 2nd term have a positive or negative affect on his eloctoral chances?

I think this is a huge negative for Trump, especially if Biden gets his messaging right for the audience of elderly voters for whom SS & M are very important.

This defunds Social Security.
Tax collection is just deferred.

in places like Florida, where it seems half the population is drawing SS and Medicare. Hey, retirees! The FICA taken out of your grandson's salary, and the grass cutting guys hourly wages, that's coming back to you every single month in your SS check and paying for your doc visits. Without it, at the very least from a Medicare standpoint, you're fucked. Might as well die now and get it over with. That's what Rethuglicans are all about.

As it stands now, companies and employees would have to pay the postponed payroll tax, presumably in January 2021. Kudlow says trump meant that if he were reelected, he'd try to make it so they don't have to pay for the postponed period. According to Kudlow, trump is not saying he'd do away with the payroll tax forever.

That is one thing about trump's stupidity, it makes it believable he meant something else when he says something foolish.

A stand in for grabbing someone's crotch I'll bet.

If there's too much pushback, he'll walk it back or maybe claim he never said any such of a thing in the first place ... and 1/3rd of the nation will actually believe him.

Then, if he's re elected he'll do everything he can to defund and destroy the very programs that keep most older and sicker Americans halfway healthy and out of complete poverty.

He and his GOP buddies will then work on ways to get those monies away from these important programs and into their pockets.

I'm telling you, if we don't make a good showing in this coming election we are doomed as a nation.
